It's the "comment" key, duh.

(This amused me so much that I just surveyed my family: "sharp", "tic-tac-toe board", "hash", "pound", and "Nethack corridor symbol" were all offered up as possible answers. Diversity is good!)

Pfft, lies. It's used for extended commands in NetHack. EXTENDED COMMANDS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN CORRIDORS!

And in newspaper reporting (and I think very old telegraph systems), "#" is used to denote "end of story/message".
