Soooo, a three year old kid broke out the Crayola washable markers and went to town on the family dog.

This being Cute Overload the response was immediate and predictable.

HORRIBLE PARENTING!

BAH! HORRIBLE CHILDFREE OVERREACTION!

YIKES! HORRIBLE THROW ON THAT COUCH!

That dog looks so chill.

It wouldn't have bitten the child's face off, it would have just... walked away. When you're three, if an animal doesn't like you, you can't do much.

(I used to live on a farm, and for many years, we had animals, like sheep. When I was five, I had a 'pet sheep' named Mary. She had a lamb. I know, I was such a creative child. I tried to pet the lamb, and Mary knocked me over. Didn't hurt me, just butted me over. I learned a valuable lesson about not petting baby animals and I was not traumatized for life. XD)

Someone on the Cute Overload website commented to that post with this quote:

""I have a dream. Someday, I really want to doodle on a dog. Can I draw on whiskers? Can I make him look like a panda? I've asked many times to draw on the pets of my friends, but nobody ever lets me. 'Get your own dog to draw on,' they say. Are they crazy? I wouldn't want a wierd-looking dog like that."

Ooh, it looks like we may get a side wank of "Lettings kids and animals come into contact is DANGEROUS! Don't you realize that lurking under the seemingly harmless interior of every domesticated companion animal is a SAVAGE, MURDEROUS BEAST who is only waiting for the RIGHT PROVOCATION to let its NATURAL BESTIALITY unleash, whereupon it will MUTILATE AND KILL any living being that happens to come near it?? You may THINK you know an animal to be harmless, but YOU ARE WRONG, because you just can NEVER UNDERSTAND the true WILD KILLER INSTICT of an ANIMAL!!!!!!"

That one's a less common nuff to CO than "I hate humans!" "I hate children" and "This animal is being abused!!!!" but I have seen it a few times nonetheless.

I really can't see what's the harm in this image, crayola non-toxic markers (and dogs don't lick themselves anyway really), child expressing their love for dog by drawing on it... and hey, the dog is probably a lot easier to take outside and give a bath too than the couch, so how is there anything but a kid and dog having fun in this situation?

I mean, I handraise baby animals on occasion, and firmly believe in animal welfare... and that dog looks like a happy animal, the kid obviously loves the dog, and it's allowed up on the furniture so it's obviously a well-loved member of the family, and it looks very well cared for.

Um, why are these people so enraged by all this?

I could understand maybe people giving a finger way if it's chalk pastels as those are actually toxic hence your supposed to wear gloves, but hello? Crayola non-toxic washable markers?

You know, my little brother once drew on the cat when he was a kid. We were astonished the cat let him, too -- Mom taught us early to "pay attention to kitty's moods, because if kitty is upset and scratches you, it's not kitty's fault". The ink probably wasn't the best thing to put on the cat's coat considering cats lick themselves, but at least it was non-toxic marker.

I used to do that to my pets all the time. :D

I remember someone freaking out about it once when I was rainbow tie-dying my rat, and I pointed out that the markers were "non-toxic"...and that they'd probably been tested for toxicity on lab rats.

When I was about five, I saw a pink poodle. I asked the owners how they got it pink, and the reply was "Food coloring!"

We had a white cat at the time. I thought she'd look great with colored spots. In the cupboard was a little set of the squeezy-plastic food coloring bottles.

Since the cat was half-asleep and wouldn't sit up or make a kittyloaf for me, I could only do one side.

One side was more than enough, according to my mom, who got stuck with the task of giving the poor kitty a bath (and even after the bath the cat still had hazy blobs of pastel colors on one side).

So: given Crayola markers and an obliging dog? I'd totally draw on him, too.

Yes, I did his entire body (even the orange bits). I used food colouring.
