But why isn't your book selling?
It's all the fault of literary agents, who are single-handedly destroying literature everywhere!

Excerpt:

The substantial and nearly unassailable wall that separates you from us has been under construction for decades. You can find the names of its architects and gatekeepers on your telephone-callers list, and in your email in-box. They are the literary agents—that league of intellectual-property purveyors who bring you every new manuscript you ever see, those men and women who are so anxious to gain access to the caverns of treasure they believe you sit upon like some great golden goose that they would likely hack one another’s heads off were they not united by one self-serving mission: to ensure that quality fiction never hits your desk.

Just a tiny bit of entitlement, elitism, and self-delusion.

And some responses...

...Are you serious? I'm not saying the summary doesn't sound ridiculous (it does!) but honestly? For an emotional eater, quite a lot

Well, unless they don't like chocolate and prefer other foods, but ehh - you know what I mean.

Well, I don't think everyone who reaches for a chocolate bar in a moment of misery qualifies as an emotional eater. And I also don't think all emotional eaters are attracted to abusive guys. I could be wrong, though.

Obviously, but that's not what you actually said.

If that's what you meant, sure, fine, but surely you can see how your original comment sounds just a tad bizarre. I mean, you're not sure what a chocolate bar could possibly have to do with weight obsessions? Right.

I'm sorry that my original comment came across wrong, then.

Thanks, then, I guess. I think that's all I was meaning.

I have not had breakfast or coffee yet, excuse me.</i>

And I'm kind of put out by you implying that because I think that emotional abuse happening to an emotional eater can = them eating a chocolate bar, that I "think all emotional eaters are attracted to abusive guys". I mean, what?

…Look, I'm sorry, I was trying to explain my original comment without making it about my personal experience. That was a bad call. I was going entirely based on the summary, in which she is attracted to him because he abuses her, which I do not think is the experience of emotional eaters.

Well, no, and I think that's one of the most ridiculous parts of the book summary, for sure.

Well, at least I got a hilariously inept troll-mouse on my journal out of this!

I reach for them in moments of extreme pain. Does that count, or am I just chasing the endorphins?
