Grendel: Real Ultimate Power!
Are you stressed out from school? I am stressed out from school. And thus, obviously, I went to [info]academics_anon for all my destressing needs!

Grendel Comes To Troll

Im reading the poem Beowulf at school, and the teacher gave us some questions to answer and i'd really appreciate it if you help me out :)

[snipped questions]

( You can answer all or any of the questions you choose :) Thanks!)

Oh, you can imagine how this was received!

Other than the obligatory "This is not a homework community!", we have:

- zeppelin imagery
- answers guaranteed to give you an A++++++ grade!
- Beowulf has Real Ultimate Power!
- "I can see Russia from my house!"
- It's tough being a savior
- the student's teacher showing up (except not really)
- Jedis and
- more general snark

(And, for bonus lols, Grendel Action Figure)

There's more. It's fun. The post is older - from October, and I'm fairly positive the OP is a troll, but I'm certain I'm not the only person who has broken-brain syndrome from uni-work and can appreciate this.

You know what? I'm tempted to help this person out, after all I loved school so much that I'm perfectly willing to do someone else's homework for free...oh wait...

She didn't even bother rewording the questions or showing that she attempted answering them on her own, did she?

Heh. I have that action figure (though "posable statue" is a more accurate description of it). And yay, an opportunity to use this icon!

Other than that, I got nuthin'.

I always imagined Grendel would look like Swamp Thing. *shrug*

Well, to be fair, this is just the movie version of Grendel, whose design was the result of director Bob Zemeckis' request that he look like the embodiment of pain. To that end, it definitely suceeds: Grendel in the movie looks like he's been partly flayed alive and partly disemboweled along with having every skin, muscle, and bone disease out there.

I wasn't criticizing, just making a joke.

Yeah, the whole not responding while getting dogpiled thing is kind of fishy, especially for a user who screams 'stereotypical high school airhead'. You'd think she'd burst in and start firing off the F bombs, but nothing.

I know people got snippy on wow_ladies when someone basically asked us to pick her essay topic, though I just ignore a lot of posts. I'm very firmly implanted with the idea on that comm that if I can't say it politely, I should just ignore it.

I've tried reading it out loud and I'm still not getting it. Is this joke contingent on knowing Old English?

Pretty much, yeah. dr_beowulf is answering the OP's first 2 questions, but if s/he doesn't know Old English or have a good lexicon, the comment won't be any help.

No, that is the actual text of the poem as far as I can tell -- the joke is that Dr. Beowulf is giving correct answers, but in such a way that they couldn't possibly be helpful to the OP, as she presumably doesn't speak Old English.

Is it bad that I can kind-of understand parts of the quotes? Then again, I had to write a paper on Beowulf using quotes from the original text, so I guess I have a little experience with it.

A good friend of mine has been working for ten years to adapt BEOWULF for the stage, and has gotten into it to the point that he's actually tried teaching himself some Old English. I've sent him a link to this for his amusement.

..I wonder if this is the kid who, in September/October, asked ChaCha about their Beowulf homework. I got the questions, and they were the exact ones from the post.

WTF?

I had a Western Civ class that was partially online last year. Bein online for the most part, it had a mini-forum for class discussions. College-age men and women used it to beg for homework answers and essay topics. Not, "hey, can someone read over my essay for a proof-read" but "wtf its due ncts wk, i need a topic this class is so dum".

Professor B hasn't taught another online class since.

Maybe I didn't read Beowulf closely enough (I... majored in area studies) but Beowulf Has Real Ultimate Power might be the most insightful analysis that I've seen.
