Don't call me Liz, BITCH.
Possible [info]political_wank? I'm posting it here, since the "politics" are largely incidental. So-and-so asks Jim McDermott's secretary for an audience, and addresses her poorly ('Liz' rather than 'Elizabeth'). HOLY SHIT, you did not just go there!

A few weeks ago, the assistant e-mailed Becton seeking a meeting with McDermott and a client, JPMorgan Chase. Days later, the assistant checked back in and unfortunately began the e-mail with “Hi Liz.”

Becton curtly replied, “Who is Liz?”

When the assistant wrote back with an apology, Becton turned up the heat. “I do not go by Liz. Where did you get your information?” she asked.

The back-and-forth went on for 19 e-mails, with the assistant apologizing six times if she had “offended” Becton, while Becton lectured about name-calling.

Please, please check out the email exchange hosted on Politico.

She has just made certain that all future e-mails to the office will be addressed to Lizzie Libby Bethyboots.

(And I say this as a fellow admin assistant who hates being erroneously nicknamed just because she's the one answering the phone.)

I saw that and thought of posting it too, but you beat me to it, Angsty McGothsalot.

I used to go off on uncles when they called me "Cait." Then again, I was eight.

Sounds like you got played by someone who KNOWS I hate that name and that it's a fast way to TICK me off. Who told you that I go by that name? They are not your friend...

CONSPIRACY!

Wow, that last email is just chock full of pissy. And the notes of paranoia and self-importance all throughout the exchange are a nice touch too. Hey, Liz, maybe they'd quit apologizing over and over if you quit harping on the matter.

I can get the original idea, though. I mean, the entire exchange is insanely wanky, but when you are approaching somebody professionally, you *do* need to be careful with addresses. Admittedly, it's easier in languages (like mine!) that have all sorts of utterly formal 'you' pronouns and address modes.

I can understand the whole idea behind wanting to be addressed by a certain name, however acting like a raging bitch over a rather bland faux pas is crazy.

A simple note of "I prefer to be addressed as FullName not Nickname, thank you." would have been more than enough.

I REALLY want to know who told you to call me that.

The mean girls, from elementary school. Oh, and that boy you had a crush on in high school who didn't know you existed and thought you were kinda fat. See, when I found out I would be communicating with you, I backtracked your personal history to find some way of making you uncomfortable, because that's just how we roll over here. Did it work?

I get being annoyed at called a nickname that you do not go by, but for heavens sake, the person apolgized when s/he realized that Liz was not a nickname Ms. Becton used. It is not as if s/he continued to use it even after knowing that fact. Then I could see getting upset, but a one-tine thing? It is not worth it.

One a side note - My name has two spellings and I tend to get annoyed when people use the wrong one in e-mails, but not enough to go on a rant for several e-mails. Most likely all I would do is bold the spelling I use any reply.

*facepalm*

On the one hand, I get where she's coming from. My name's Amanda and I really, really hate the nickname Mandy. Family calls me it and I allow it because I try not to tell off family. (Besides, it's mostly my grandma these days and there are things one just doesn't do.)

But all it would have taken was one mention of, "I prefer to go by Elizabeth, please." That's all. Going all ranty pants over it all? Yeah, not so good for showing your sanity, Lizzy.

if you cannot control your rage at the sound of a common nickname, you need to go get counseling.

Also, I'd suggest to Jim McDermott that he get an office manager who, you know ... manages his office and schedule... Instead of making up conspiracy theories about nicknames.

At this point, I would've checked to make sure I got Liz's actual email and the person who gave it to me wasn't playing some sort of prank.

I would feel fortunate that my name is so short that any nickname derived from it would end up being longer and thus pointless, but even so people around me can't handle a simple, widely-used name and keep fucking it up. I just sigh and let it go, though.
