HOW DARE YOU CALL ME FAT
Mars from Chicken Dinner Candybar does her regular Fat Love Friday and includes Marie from Agent Lover.

Marie is put off by her inclusion on a "fat" list and tells Mars so.

Mars offers to take it down. Marie refuses. Instead, she proclaims on her blog, "oh haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaale no!

Chaos ensues in the comments about fatphobia, body acceptance, fashion sense (or the lack thereof), and kissing-up commentors.

Is Marie brave or is she overreacting?

(I'm in the comments and I know Natalie [the 'overreacting' link], so I am slightly involved in the wank aftermath. It's pretty obvious which side i'm on.)

BTW, you're mentioning the "fat-o-sphere". Where should I find such marvelous fat-positive stuff?

There's a book, called "Lessons from the Fat-o-Sphere" (usually fatosphere, until the publisher wanted an -o-), by Kate Harding and Mary Anne Kirby. In Australia, it got its original title: "Screw Inner Beauty".

I think when you post an entry that you feel the need to include mentions of our involvement with, it leans a bit more towards "i_wank". Which isn't to say I'm somehow the expert on these things. But it does strike me as a bit grudgy when you're friends with one of the people calling out someone else's behaviour.

I was wondering about that myself. However, I felt the main wank was in Mars & Marie's posts, which I had nothing to do with. I knew Natalie was passionate about fatphobia-related things so I thought she'd be interested in saying something about it.

I'm kinda fangirling Natalie now. *bookmarks "How to Love Yourself in 8 Really Hard Steps" for future pick-me-ups*

I've been becoming more comfortable with myself - especially my shape - in the last few years, and it's kinda hard to do. I'm not really there yet. I don't think Marie is either.

Hey, I'm about Marie's size. Guess what? You're a fatty fat fat. Fatty fat fat fatty fat fat FAT. When people still give you looks and treat you differently, no amount of "Oh, you're not faaaat" from their mouths is going to change that.

No girl wants to be called fat? Well, I guess I don't exist. Because I'd rather be called what I am than the usual backhanded "Oh, you're not FAT" because obviously I'm not lazy, stupid, frumpy, etc. and some miraculous exception to the rule. Hearing "You're not that fat" is about the same to me as hearing, "Oh, you're not that black." What's wrong with it if I am?

Sorry, I'll clean up after myself. *feather-duster!*

I was going to say the same thing. I'm a similar size, and while I don't consider myself obese (most days, some days aren't so good), I sure ain't skinny.

Provided they don't have excepting health or lifestyle factors that preclude weight loss, people need to accept the reality that they are in control of their own body. If you're happy being fat, be happy. If not, make the change.

Oh! I just thought of something re: weight and your happiness or unhappiness with it.

Do you know who whines the most about weight? My stick friends. You know, the ones who don't have an ounce of fat on their bodies except for like, a tiny paunch. I'm like CRI MOAR while they're poking at their imaginary flab or whatever.

So here's the deal: skinny/muscly/whatever people think they're fat. Fat people think they're fat. We're all fat. How's that? We can all be happy in the fact that we will never be our ideal because once one reaches an ideal, there's a new ideal to be reached. So someone calls you fat: LAUGH. We're all effing insecure, fat is just a word. It's not even particularly offensive (in my mind, plz feel free to disagree).

By the way, I didn't say this last night because I didn't want you to feel bad, but fat wank almost always falls into the "unfunny" category. (I've certainly been guilty of helping that along in this post - sorry, everyone.)

I am sadly* kind of pleased that I clicked the comments link to this post itself figuring on 80-90% failtasticness, and it seems to be limited to one long thread caused by the same two or three people with everyone else either kindly (and entirely in vain) trying to explain reality/logic, or telling them to just STFU.
