HOW DARE YOU CALL ME FAT
Mars from Chicken Dinner Candybar does her regular Fat Love Friday and includes Marie from Agent Lover.

Marie is put off by her inclusion on a "fat" list and tells Mars so.

Mars offers to take it down. Marie refuses. Instead, she proclaims on her blog, "oh haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaale no!

Chaos ensues in the comments about fatphobia, body acceptance, fashion sense (or the lack thereof), and kissing-up commentors.

Is Marie brave or is she overreacting?

(I'm in the comments and I know Natalie [the 'overreacting' link], so I am slightly involved in the wank aftermath. It's pretty obvious which side i'm on.)

You're an ass and you have no idea what you're talking about. Until you've monitored the diet and lifestyle of every fat person ever for a good length of time, shut the hell up.

*sigh* Okay, okay I give. She's been my friend for years, so that "monitored the diet and lifestyle of every fat person ever for a good length of time," got it. What I don't like and didn't feel necessary to add was that she claimed low metabolism due to genetics, which I also have. The difference is that my chubby self doesn't scarf half of what she does and, yeah, that does bother me a bit. I don't whine about my weight - I'm fat, and there's only so much I can do about it, but I am doing it. To say there's nothing that can be done because of x-y-or z is insane.

Whenever she goes on - at length - about how she's fat and needs to diet and doesn't listen to anyone. First it was "No, you're not fat," then it was "Try this food instead of ice cream/cake/pizza/etc, you might like it," and then it was *rolls eyes* and moving on.

OK, gotcha. But that's not everyone. Your friend has issues, but that's her. When someone says to you, One person!=all fat people. One person's actions around you!=how they always behave. , and you say "Okay!" response, then you come across as yet another fat-hating troll. Can you see that?

Oh yeah, I can, but at the time I was more seeing red than anything and it really is better that I didn't post the TL;DR RWAR I had typed up. I hate excuses. Hate them hate them hate them because I spend most of my time avoiding making them (I admit to the occasional Culvers run which is bad for me). I know way, way too many people who've done wonders about their weight - my mother and her best friend being two of the most dramatic examples. The best friend in question once weighed well over 300 pounds and had two sisters pass away due to obesity related problems. She decided that wasn't going to happen to her and while took a few years and a doctor to watch her that lady looks fanfreakingtastic (I think she's at 135ish nowadays, but I could be wrong)! All she did was cut the crap out of her diet, insert more fruits and veggies and talk her two doggies out for a long walk every day. I want to be her, cause that's what I do sans doggies. But I can only get so far. So I know a lot of weight-related people thingies. Some good, and a couple pull-my-hear-out-will-you-STOP-already!

...

Er, mostly I apologize for being not funny. Ima go cuddle my kitty now.

Well, that's great that they were able to do that. And I can understand your frustration with your friend.

Actually... (disclaimer: I'm quoting these numbers from memory, since I'm too tired to google right now, but I can dig up the studies if you'd like.)

The numbers say that virtually everyone can lose some weight when starting a diet and/or exercise program, and all programs work roughly equally as well for a given person. But the vast majority will fail, even if the program(s) are kept up perfectly to the same level, within three years. Failure is defined as reaching or exceeding your starting weight. 98% diets will fail within 5 years. Exercise programs are a better bet - they have only a 96% failure rate after 5 years.

But the people who succeed at permanently keeping weight off almost always fall into two categories: people who had managed to force their bodies to an unnatural size for them, such as through a severe eating disorder or force feeding themselves for a movie role; or people who continually escalate their diet or exercise throughout the entire five year span.

So unless your friend has maintained her her weight loss for more than three to five years now, she's almost certainly going to end back up at 300 pounds. The good news is that she'll probably be a healthy 300 pounds, since eating well and getting moderate exercise is good for you even when it doesn't effect your weight.

Yeah, I think you sound too much like you think losing weight is always a good thing and should be a goal in and of itself.

Protip: when someone is 'whining' about being fat, the helpful response is not "You're not fat" or "You could be thinner if you ate better". Because the goal should not be losing weight. The goal should be having a better self-esteem; a much better response would be "And what is wrong with being fat?"
