Oh, it's always the same argument! Animals are abused/killed, some people are outraged and pledge money, other people come in with the, "Oh, sure, all this for ANIMALS, what about PEOPLE?!?" I like to call it the "Compassion Zero-Sum Equation Fallacy": if you have compassion for animals, you have less compassion for people; and if you have compassion for people, you have to wait until all people are taken care of before you can then take compassion on animals.
