The Great Internet Bra Debate
How dirty is your bra?

Someone sent a letter to Dear Prudence asking if his girlfriend was normal because she's worn the same bra every day for two weeks. Prudie gives her usual inadequate and perplexing answer, starting with:

Perhaps your worries about hygiene arise from watching too much soft-core porn in which women get in the shower and soap their breasts for extended periods.

Reader comments range everywhere from ick:

I always wear a clean bra each day, just like I wear clean underwear EACH DAY. I've never heard of such a thing in my life as wearing the same clothes every day for weeks on end, especially not undergarments. And no, I'm not "filthy" rich. I grew up in a single wide trailer with extremely poor, hardworking parents, who taught me the value of SOAP and daily bathing.

to double standard!

Am I the only perosn who sees the endless gender-based double standard in society today? If this question was posed by a woman with a boyfriend who wore the same boxers for a week, the response would have centered around the boyfriend's level of evolution.

to several comments about how bras are expensive and wear out in the wash, bras don't get as dirty as undies, several comments asking how the guy knows she doesn't wash it, maybe she has several bras that look exactly the same, and there's even an informal poll asking how long people wear bras between washings. One of the best answers to the poll:

15 minutes. i have to take it off before me wife comes back

I wash my bras when they get bloody. Or well, thats what I did right after the reduction surgery. This pair seems to be pretty ooze free, so maybe I'm past that stage.

As long as y'all are here, I'm new to this "sports bra" concept. Do they have to be handwashed like ungodly expensive underwirey monstrosities I used to wear or can I just fling them in the machine with my socks?

Depends on the sports bra, in my experience. I usually do the cold handwash cycle on my machine and then hang them up to dry, because it's the dryer that really takes a chomp out of them and hot water shrinks them, IMHO. Although if they stretch out over time, a hot water wash can sometimes return them to their pre-stretchy shape.

My general rule is that the more ornamentation, the less machine washer friendly.

I just toss mine in the wash. Since I don't use a dryer, there's no problem with heat and shrinkage.

You were able to wear a bra right after? It took me at least two weeks to raise my arms after my surgery; I didn't even think about wearing a bra for at least a month or so.

Why doesn't the boyfriend wash the bras for her if it is of such a concern to him?

Anyone that has a size manufacturers think shouldn't exist?
Fuck, I'd be thrilled if I could find one for only $25, I'm stuck with imports and buying bras every time the dollar is worth enough compared to the pound to bring it down into the 50 dollar range.

Wait, what?

I live in a third-world country and $25 is what I usually pay (well, I don't buy local brands), as well. And I'm not even plus-sized or blessed with a weird rare size. Do you live in Magical Bra Land, or something?

Huh? I don't think I've bought one for less than $35 in many years. They just don't make them cheap for a 44DDD. But I didn't know they came at less than $25 for smaller, either. o.O

Those of us who can't find cheaper bras that fit and are comfortable? The bras at Target/Sears/whatever never fit me properly and fall apart anyway. Cheap sports bras don't support me enough for sports and my chest starts to ache from squish if I wear sports bras all day, not to mention that they don't look good under most of my street clothes. Good for you that that works for you, but it doesn't for a lot of us. (And I'm not an unusual size, either - 38C/D.)

I wish I could buy a bra for $25! I have to spend at least $80 per bra. I also have to have mine shipped from Atlanta. Grr.

I'd say it's insane as well -- but the other way, in that in my experience that would be insanely cheap.

But then, I haven't been able to buy my bras in regular stores since 8th grade, really -- not any that fit correctly, anyway. That's when I sized out of Victoria's Secret. And while there's some extent to which you can adjust cup size by adding more Ds on to a number, the difference in back pain between a 42DDD and a 38H is ASTOUNDING -- in that, in the latter? My back *doesn't hurt* just because of my breasts, well, *being there*. And I also don't look like some strangely put-together science experiment.

In summation? Most of the bras that I buy are $75.00 or more, from specialty lingerie boutique stores. Because they're the ones that have the sizes that I need, that fit me comfortably, without pain and with a good silhouette (and also, if cared for, last a good long time). Which is something that all women should be able to expect from their bras. But that, sadly, once you start getting out of the VS sizes you have to pay extra to get.

I'm probably going to be the only person who agrees with you that $25, or £15.50, would be an expensive bra. At least for me. I get all mine on sale, and they're all funky-coloured and lacy and padded and comfortable, and that's not even the biggest upside of being s 34B. I think I've got fantastic bras that cost all of £4.

I've never heard of such a thing in my life as wearing the same clothes every day for weeks on end, especially not undergarments.

Use of phrase "I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING" always makes me lol. It's inadvisable if other options are open to you, yes, but not such an apalling concept that it's inconceivable. Once upon a time you'd've been sewn into your clothes through the winter and bloody lumped it.

Also, I like to imagine that Prudence was being magnificantly sarcastic.

Reading this has made me remember that I lost my favorite and most comfortable colorful polka-dot bra somewhere in my old dorm. :( Now I'm stuck with pink, blue, and improperly-fitting white.

Considering I lost one, I only own about 3 bras, so they get a pretty good length of wear-time before they get washed. (At least a week, though I don't wear the same one consecutively FOR a week). I mean, I don't get sweat on them, and they're protected underneath my shirts... I don't understand all of the "OH MY WORD"s at the notion, lol.

I have a Marfanoid ribcage and 38H (in US sizing) breasts that fluctuate cup size pretty regularly, and I can't wear lace, so I only have four bras that actually fit well enough to wear on a regular basis. So changed once a week, with lots of deodorising and damp-cloth wiping in between...
