The Great Internet Bra Debate
How dirty is your bra?

Someone sent a letter to Dear Prudence asking if his girlfriend was normal because she's worn the same bra every day for two weeks. Prudie gives her usual inadequate and perplexing answer, starting with:

Perhaps your worries about hygiene arise from watching too much soft-core porn in which women get in the shower and soap their breasts for extended periods.

Reader comments range everywhere from ick:

I always wear a clean bra each day, just like I wear clean underwear EACH DAY. I've never heard of such a thing in my life as wearing the same clothes every day for weeks on end, especially not undergarments. And no, I'm not "filthy" rich. I grew up in a single wide trailer with extremely poor, hardworking parents, who taught me the value of SOAP and daily bathing.

to double standard!

Am I the only perosn who sees the endless gender-based double standard in society today? If this question was posed by a woman with a boyfriend who wore the same boxers for a week, the response would have centered around the boyfriend's level of evolution.

to several comments about how bras are expensive and wear out in the wash, bras don't get as dirty as undies, several comments asking how the guy knows she doesn't wash it, maybe she has several bras that look exactly the same, and there's even an informal poll asking how long people wear bras between washings. One of the best answers to the poll:

15 minutes. i have to take it off before me wife comes back

Kicking off the requisite poll here:

An average of 3 days, depending on activity level and temperature outside.

Two days for me, that's as long as I can keep track. I keep my just-washed bras in drawer in my dresser. After wearing a braw one day, I put it on top of my dresser, so I know that I wore it once, but it's still clean enough to wear again. Second day, I toss it in the hamper after wearing it.

If I tried for three days, I'd completely lose track.

I can't do more than one day. I live in Texas, so after I wear a bra, there's literally a WHOLE THING of sweat just burnt into the cups.

Basically, anyone who lives where it's pretty dang hot, I would judge for wearing their bras more than a day in a row.

Anywhere where it's more temperate, I can see wearing up to 3 days.

2 weeks? NEVER, EVER AN OPTION. Good GOD. Does it move of it's own accord? Is it sentient?

I'm not proud: I do the nose test, and wear it until I can't. I have exactly one comfortable bra. I was up to two, but the power of the girls, I'm serious, caused the front closure to snap. Serious wardrobe malfunction. All washing is strictly by hand, as well, and drying is frequently by hairdryer. I'm not taking chances with this puppy.

Two days, usually, but that gets me pretty far; being a stay-at-home mom often means BRA OPTIONAL. WAHAHAHAHA.

Therefore, bras I wear to just, say, run to the store can last more than that because I only wore the damn thing for two hours.

I have 5 that I cycle through during the 2 weeks between trips to the laundromat, so about 2-3 days per bra (but not consecutively).

In a row, three or four. But the fact is that usually I wear a different pair every day, so I don't actually really know how any times I wear my bras before washing them O_o I don't know what to make of that. At least my bras have never smelled bad, so I suppose I'm safe?

Depends on lots of things. Your basic t-shirt bra: two or three days. Bra I'm wearing to the gym or other physical activity: just the once, because they get disgusting. Awesome low-cut push-up lacy thing: until my back starts aching, so usually two or three hours.

I'm the same, though it also depends on the cut. I often wear sports bras, and some are cut high enough on the sides under my arms to get sweaty easily, whereas others don't really come anywhere near my armpits.

I wash my bras when they are dirty, which could be after a single wear (when I am doing fieldwork and actually sweat through my bras, disgustingly), or once a (less icky) bra is smelly (once a week to once every two weeks dependng on what I am doing and hot humid it is), although honestly I think I have a purple and black lace bra from Lane Bryant that I bought for $10 in 2006 and is so uncomfortable that I can only wear it for an hour or so at a time, and may possibly have never washed it ever, as I doubt it has even accumulated a days worth of wear in the last 3 years.

I wash bras once a week. I have two that I wear regularly and another two I can sub in if one of the two gets smelly/pops an underwire, plus my Comfy Bra that will surely fall apart one of these days that I wear on washing days. The two I wear most regularly generally get laundered every week and the others get laundered whenever I deem it necessary. Which is a lot more often since I came to humid, sweaty Japan.

I wash 'em after I wear 'em. I have weirdoriffic body chemistry (LOL HELO SALT METABOMOLISM) so I do this to avoid getting underarm stainery. I know it's not necessary for EVERYBODY to do this. I just have funny body chemistry.

Two days, but never consecutively. Like I'll wear bra #1, bra #2, then bra #1, bra #2, and then those two go into the hamper. I've heard that wearing bras two days in a row stretches them out quicker, so I've been doing this to keep it from happening.

I change every single day. O_O I'd feel icky if I didn't -- the climate I live in isn't especially hot or anything, I just don't like the idea of it. Even in the middle of freezing cold winter.

One day, because (TMI alert) I have psoriasis, and there's an unfortunate tendency for dandruff to fall into the bra cups and sort of build up drifts there.
