The Great Internet Bra Debate
How dirty is your bra?

Someone sent a letter to Dear Prudence asking if his girlfriend was normal because she's worn the same bra every day for two weeks. Prudie gives her usual inadequate and perplexing answer, starting with:

Perhaps your worries about hygiene arise from watching too much soft-core porn in which women get in the shower and soap their breasts for extended periods.

Reader comments range everywhere from ick:

I always wear a clean bra each day, just like I wear clean underwear EACH DAY. I've never heard of such a thing in my life as wearing the same clothes every day for weeks on end, especially not undergarments. And no, I'm not "filthy" rich. I grew up in a single wide trailer with extremely poor, hardworking parents, who taught me the value of SOAP and daily bathing.

to double standard!

Am I the only perosn who sees the endless gender-based double standard in society today? If this question was posed by a woman with a boyfriend who wore the same boxers for a week, the response would have centered around the boyfriend's level of evolution.

to several comments about how bras are expensive and wear out in the wash, bras don't get as dirty as undies, several comments asking how the guy knows she doesn't wash it, maybe she has several bras that look exactly the same, and there's even an informal poll asking how long people wear bras between washings. One of the best answers to the poll:

15 minutes. i have to take it off before me wife comes back

I'm not proud: I do the nose test, and wear it until I can't. I have exactly one comfortable bra. I was up to two, but the power of the girls, I'm serious, caused the front closure to snap. Serious wardrobe malfunction. All washing is strictly by hand, as well, and drying is frequently by hairdryer. I'm not taking chances with this puppy.

Same here. I actually don't own many bras because I have a weird size and am broke.

This. Mine are starting to fall apart, and the ones that are still intact haven't fit since I lost the tiniest bit of weight.

Bleargh, so much hate for bra shopping... *dread*

Mine go missing. So I wear whatever I can find as long as they don't feel gross. :( I DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY GO.

Same. It'd help if I could just waltz into VS and buy a cute $30 bra or whatever but the four bra I do have all came from Nordstrom because they were the only place that sized me correctly and then gave me bras that fit comfortably. Which sadly means they run closer to $80 a pop. And three of these bras don't fit comfortable anymore cause I got fatter but like I hell I have money to replace them. So I just put up with the pain. ._.

You know, if you sacrificed one of those three, you could make a back extender that would make the other two fit. Cut the hook and eye bits off one of them (with about two inches of extra material on both pieces), and sew them together, hooks up on one end, and eyes down on the other. Instant extender - and it's free!

Jo-Ann's and even KMart sell wide-back bra extenders now! They run $5 each at KMart, but Jo-Ann's usually has them for about $3 each. (This assumes you're in the US) They're in the notions section at Jo-Ann's and the bra section at KMart. Not a perfect solution, but if length around is the main problem they'll help quite a bit.

I love Nordys for stocking bras that come close to fitting me, but yes, their prices are severely Up There. Worth it for a good bra, though. Try a back extender--they're fairly cheap and really do make a difference.

Exactly this. Being a very curvy girl, bras are effing expensive, and I'm on disability and hunting for a job. Money? What's that? :P

Man, I thought I was majorly skevvy for doing the sniff test on bras, but know I know I AM NOT ALONE!

This. I have two bras that fit me right now, and since they cost almost fifty bucks, I'm not buying another one anytime soon. I usually wash them once a month-- but I am nearly homebound and don't wear a bra (they hurt, even though they're super-extra-comfy cotton bras) when I'm home, so they don't get worn that much.

I hear you. I recently spent my month's discretionary income on taking myself from owning two comfortable bras to five, because one of the two had become senescent.

Gah! For a moment there I thought you said your bra had become SENTIENT.

Clearly it's time to put the wine bottle away.

Me too. Bras are so absurdly expensive that I only have a couple.

Which reminds me, one just bit the dust and I need to get a replacement before school starts up again.

You are a very sensible person. I say this because I'm the same way. I own three bras (very recently up from one). Should I do laundry every three days?

Same.

I wash my bras when they start to smell like me. Otherwise? Pfft. They're fine.

(Jeans are much the same way. I wear my jeans for a week if I didn't spill anything on them. Of course, I don't wear jeans very often anymore, being more of a skirt person.)

I wear both for a week...because it depends on how often I leave the house. If I think they're a little funky like two days later, I febreeze them and keep going. Because the range from wearing a bra (and pants, since equal time) can range from an hour to ten. If it's been ten, I retire the bra and jeans for the week. Then I take them to my godmom for her to wash them. I have...I wanna say 5 bras and I'll change how often I wear them depending on the color of the shirt too. I'm not going to wear my black one with a shirt anymore than I'd wear a white one with a see-through black shirt. So they get various uses depending on what I feel like wearing that day.

Of course, I have seven pairs of jeans since Lane Bryant had a half-price sale a couple weeks ago. Yay for no more threadbare thighs. I had eight until I realized I was about one washing from popped seams.

I recently found a bra style that's both really comfortable and nice looking under clothes.

I bought 4.

I'm in Arizona, so during the summer I'm lucky to get 2 days. Even if you spend most of your time inside here, getting into the car will make you all kinds of sweaty.

I avoid washing my bras until they're actually dirty. That can be quite a while, if it's not hot out and I'm not too active while wearing them. I mostly end up washing them once I absentmindedly drop them on the floor and they get cat hair on them.

The only bras I've ever been happy with would be damn expensive to replace, and washing them wears out the elastic. And I have to wear my bras on the last hook (or I'd have to custom-order), so once the elastic loosens, that's the end of the bra.

Same here. Mine usually break in the middle and I get the lovely sharp-pointy-ow underwire, and one even broke on the side under my arm recently. Possibly I should start hand-washing them; I've already cut out the dryer, but I worry about them even in the washing machine...

I have two bras which vaguely fit and a washingmachine that dislikes being used. :S I change them when the moon is in the ascendent.
