The Great Internet Bra Debate
How dirty is your bra?

Someone sent a letter to Dear Prudence asking if his girlfriend was normal because she's worn the same bra every day for two weeks. Prudie gives her usual inadequate and perplexing answer, starting with:

Perhaps your worries about hygiene arise from watching too much soft-core porn in which women get in the shower and soap their breasts for extended periods.

Reader comments range everywhere from ick:

I always wear a clean bra each day, just like I wear clean underwear EACH DAY. I've never heard of such a thing in my life as wearing the same clothes every day for weeks on end, especially not undergarments. And no, I'm not "filthy" rich. I grew up in a single wide trailer with extremely poor, hardworking parents, who taught me the value of SOAP and daily bathing.

to double standard!

Am I the only perosn who sees the endless gender-based double standard in society today? If this question was posed by a woman with a boyfriend who wore the same boxers for a week, the response would have centered around the boyfriend's level of evolution.

to several comments about how bras are expensive and wear out in the wash, bras don't get as dirty as undies, several comments asking how the guy knows she doesn't wash it, maybe she has several bras that look exactly the same, and there's even an informal poll asking how long people wear bras between washings. One of the best answers to the poll:

15 minutes. i have to take it off before me wife comes back

If she's anything like me, if she ever finds one that's comfortable and fits and does it's job well, she will buy as many of them as she can possibly afford and/or as many as they have in stock, right then and there.

Of course, this means that this last time, when I discovered that my new perfect bra type became quickly un-perfect after just a few months of use, there went three bras gone to hell instead of just the one. NOOOO! And one had polka dots! And now they're sitting there in my bra drawer with the all the other bras that don't fit right, and each morning I stare dejectedly into the teeming mass and try to decide which one might be the least uncomfortable today, for I am down to only one that even sort of halfway works but it has seams that show through under t-shirts. GODDAMN IT. FUCKING BRAS. >:(

[/obligatory bra-related tl;dr]

Oh I HATE that. I'm on the verge of shelling out the money for a custom made bra* just so that I can get one that doesn't have inappropriately placed seams. No one should have to wear bras that require wearing an undershirt just to keep their chests from looking like a geometry lesson in angles. Personally I'd like to know that people are staring in appreciation, not because they're trying to work out the cosine in the middle of lefty.

*Also, custom made bras can be obtained locally and don't involve driving an hour and a half to an outlet mall.

There's at least three shops I've found within 30 miles of me. I just searched for "custom made bras" in my area and then tacked review 2009 on to the search terms to sort out which were still in business and which ones actually make bras rather than just offering custom fittings. Apparently there's a growing market for custom bras as women get bigger and store bras get smaller/less supportive. I know I'll happily pay $60 for a custom made bra rather than $30 for an ill-fitting store bra. *sends good bra vibes to aid in the search*

Sounds like my problem. :( Though, I have a really really comfy bra I just bought, but now I can't find it. This puzzles me greatly. I have no idea where it has gone off to. Even the husband has no clue.

I'll blame it on the elves. Fucking bra stealing elves.

I bought a matching set of grey bra and knickers. Have the knickers, don't have a clue where the bra went.

On the other hand, I did manage to leave my only pair of shoes in Cornwall one time...

That'd be me as well. Why continue trying on fifty thousand kinds when I've already found one that works and is plentiful?

Every time we have anyone visiting from out west, or someone from here goes to visit someone out there, I make them go to my stupid-expensive store and buy me Yet Another Bra, because I will cry if I have to go through the hassle of finding one that works for me again.

World's comfiest bras: Decent Exposures. They're pricey (but they're hand made) and they aren't quite as supportive as commercial bras, but if you've ever had pain from a bra, you can't beat them.

I heard that from, like, a million people, so I bought two (in different materials/support levels). They are my least comfortable bras. I guess I'm just doomed to be an underwire gal. :(

That sucks! I have fibromyalgia, and they are literally the only bras I can tolerate. I'm sorry they didn't work for you!

I've had someone else suggest them, but wireless bras make me sag something fierce, and at 25, that is not something I want.

Those look like they wouldn't support me for twenty minutes, and I'm not outlandishly huge. I need underwire if it's going to be something I wear regularly. They look comfy for puttering around the house, though.

I'm in the same boat. Bought a bra and loved it, went back and bought two more, and now a couple of months later one has just had its straps completely destroyed in the wash, and another one's got one of its hooks bent out of place (and in such a way that I can't seem to permanently fix it), leading to great discomfort. Arrgh.

Perhaps you can cannibalize the bent-hook ones to provide new straps for the other one?

Oh god, yes.

Years ago I found a Perfect Bra, so I bought 4. And then Jockey decided to discontinue them. I've even sent them letters begging them to make the bra again, and I get back nonsense replies that prove they didn't really read my letter. 9_9

How hard is it to make a cotton, non-underwire, front-close bra that is NOT a T-back or a racer-back? (But also not a sports-bra.) APPARENTLY REALLY HARD. Grrr. Because I can't frickin' find any others.

Hell, I don't even care about front close. Non-underwire anything is a pain in the ass to find at my size.

I've seen one at Sears that does that, but the last time I went bra shopping was three months ago so I don't know if they're still there or not.

I've had Deceiving Bras, although not as much as Lying Bastard Shoes that are comfortable for exactly 1.2 miles before the crippling agony sets in.

Also, the next time I go into a bra shop and the assistant says 'Now we have to add five inches to your ribcage to make our bras pretend to fit you, freako I'm going to get violent.

I do not understand that at all. If my band size is my ribcage + five inches, that makes me a 42. Which I'm really, really not.

Oh, I forgot to mention the cute-but-plain grey cotton bra I bought. It was looser-made than usual so I got the 30H. I loved it so much I got the same one in black and pink...

only to find that black and pink cotton don't stretch the same way grey does, so they were painfully tight. I had to buy bra extenders for them and sew them onto the back.

I too buy several of any design that works for me. Also, I mean, I buy all my bras at once if I can, with coupons and BOGOs and crap, and I basically go bra-shopping once a year between Christmas and New Year's. Which is good, when the designs you really need are in the $35 range, and you can't see your way clear to paying more than $15.

I did have a lace bra self-destruct while I was wearing it, once. Just one cup, and the lace all suddenly said, "Sorry, no!" and let go in the middle of work. After that, I learned always to hand-wash and air-dry my bras.

Ha ha, that's exactly why most of my underpants and bras are red and green or have printed lights and reindeer on them. Hooray after holiday sales!

My Perfect Bra was a Sloggi make that they promptly discontinued. I was very cross, especially since I'd just bought it on a whim and thus bought a turquoise one.

Then I found a two-pack set for £8 in Dunnes that may actually be the Most Perfect Bras Ever In The World. I am very very scared. But happy. And pink bra-ed. For £4 each!
