Thanks to a mouse on wank report. Added some links, but mostly c&p'd from the wank report.

This one's fairly new, but has been heating up all morning:

Quartet Press, once hailed by Dear Author (and Smart Bitches, to a lesser degree) as THE start-up digital publisher to watch, the bright and shiny future of e-pubbing, folds before it's published a single book.

Over on DA, comments start out with sympathy and hand-wringing over how this will affect the future of digital publishing as well as the fate of QP editor Angela James, whose ship-jumping from Samhain to QP was loudly proclaimed by DA less than a month ago, but quickly turns into criticism of both QP and James with an undercurrent of "how's that egg facial feeling?" aimed at DA's Jane (it starts at comment 42). Over on SBTB, however, it's a festivus of finger-pointing and backpedaling. Karen Scott expresses her lack of surprise and there the atmosphere is generally one of shock and dismay, but agreeing that QP's promise seemed far too good to be true.

The fun really starts when Jamaica Layne of Ravenous Romance (another epublisher) gets word of what's happened. Between the violation of Snacky's Law and the "ain't karma a bitch?" conclusion, the schadenfreude is just oozing from her blog. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with the way Dear Author has ripped both Ravenous Romance and Layne herself to shreds, could it? Nah. Ann Somerville tries to start something on SBTB, but it doesn't go too well.

More discussion about QP - including comments by Layne, posting as Sakamonda, on the Absolute Write Water Cooler.

And, finally, Angela James and Kassia Krozer address the closing of QP.

Also, DP = double penetration, not digital publishing.

Ravenous’s worst offense, though, is the fact that the owners and writers of Ravenous are putting out what they call “feminist smut” (Lori Perkins self describes as a purveyor of feminist smut) and calling it romance.

Those BASTARDS!

This statement confuses me. Is 'feminist smut' bad? Are they saying smut can never be the same as romance? Can only male-centric bodice-rippers with light fluffies and the sexiest line is something like 'He went in and out and in and out' count as romance? What does it meaaaan?

And contrary to what they meant their statement to do, I kinda wanna go read Ravenous now. I'm hoping if it's 'feminist smut' it'll be more involved than 'I met her. She became naked. I stuck it in her pooper.'

Whut? I was under the impression that when real grownups fall in love, lots and lots of smut occurs.

Has fandom been doing it wrong all along???

Wow, Jamaica Layne brings the same level of class to her blogging as she does to her writing.

When one writes time-traveling knights shaking pee-dripping cocks at women in the loo as a turn-on, one should probably be careful on the insults one hurls towards other authors and editors. Or maybe that's just me.

I found you a quote from LaNora. It's in reference to the 'Feminist Smut' article though, haven't seen anything else about the whole debacle.

"..If you call your book(s) smut, they are likely to be perceived as such. If that’s your goal, congratulations.

If, however, you wish to reach a wider audience and try to brand what you’ve labeled smut as Romance in order to do so, you will offend and anger many–writers and readers.

Smut is a word used to offend, insult or at least garner attention. Go right ahead and use it to describe the books published by RR if that’s your choice.

But if you use it, publish it, then call it Romance, you’re in for a hell of a backlash. As is evidenced by this thread."

Comment #76 if you don't want to wade through the wank.

I felt Cheesel’s pain when he had to reveal his dark secret (but hey, he had to - he turned into a gerbil while they were having oral sex - I mean, a girl usually notices when she has a gerbil in her mouth

What does it say about me that my first thought was, "At least their positions weren't reversed"?

Not that discovering I had a gerbil peen in my mouth would be all that fabulous either...

Okay, I've been totally distracted by the review of Ravenous Romance's books.

In American Star, the male protagonist describes his partner’s cock as unrolling from his pants like a paper towel roll in the kitchen and says he wants to throw the cock over his shoulder and burp it.

describes his partner’s cock as unrolling from his pants like a paper towel roll in the kitchen

Flup flup flup flup flup! 8D

I think I'm kind of seeing an actual paper towel roll coming out somehow. Also, what are those things you blow at parties and the little roll of paper shoots out straight and it makes a sort of hornlike farting noise? BRB, dieing of laughter.

The relatively small, close-knit (and dare I say, snarky and emotionally immature) epublishing blogosphere pounced on Ravenous and its authors, claws drawn. The attacks, flame wars---even out-and-out harrassment---of Ravenous Romance's staff and authors by a small group of epublishing bloggers and (mostly) unpublished authors was like something out of Dante. It was like the meanest sorority-girl-slash-junior-high-school prank turned into an online horror movie. Worst of all, even some editors and staffers at some of Ravenous' competitors got in on the "fun," in appalling public acts of unprofessionalism. One blogger in particular (who shall remain nameless here) became a ringleader of sorts, dragging on the vicious mean-girl hazing (I can think of no better term for it) for several months.

And this lady's professional? As in, over the age of 15? How do you survive the industry with a skin that thin?
