Ugly knit hats provide hope for the masses!
Knitting Daily featured the Champagne Fizz Hat in its free patterns section.

Kristin@37 kicks off the comments:
I love to knit. I will knit practically anything. I will not knit this.

Too foul by far.

Some agree; others decry her negativity and ask where her sense of fun has gone. ShuriuL explains that the hataz are interrogating the hat from the wrong perspective:
Ladies! Everyone's missing the point! This hat was probably inspired by Diane Von Furstenberg's Fall 2009 Ready-To-Wear collection, which had lovely knit sweaters, knit tunics, knit scarves, and knit coats. Every model wore this hat with variations. The pompoms were much bigger and the overall silhouette made the models appear to be wearing hats similar to men's Renaissance hats. This collection was made touching and whimsical when most designers on either side of the Atlantic had chosen to make monotone, aggressive, boxy, conservative clothing that was more masculine and warrior-like than feminine and patterned. It was a seminal collection and spoke of hope, optimism, and fun when last year's collections came out in February and people were more depressed and scared than they are now.

As for me, I just hope I'm not on LynnR@15's gift list:
Oh, aren't some people just too precious for this rough world?

This hat is terrific fun! Not for everyone to knit, or wear. It is a technically simple knit, with plenty of scope in yarns and colour for some individual, creative expression. Daring older people will delight in shocking their stuffy peers and younger people will think it a cool novelty.

I shall knit loads of these for Christmas prezzies, for young and old alike.

Long live eccentric knitting! (Yes, I'm going to shock my peers!)

This post and the subject line of the one below are a dandy combination.

I think there is something wrong with me. I may need therapy.

I've been looking for a wild and whacky pattern like this...can't wait to get started.

It always bothers me when people spell "wacky" with an h. Am I right to be bothered by it, or is that a valid spelling? I've checked 2 dictionaries and can't be bothered to find another one...

My god, even the model looks like she hates it. Look at her face! That is a "Yes, I'm going to wear the hat and smile for the damn camera, but if you show that fucking picture to anyone, I will cut you, bitch!" face if I have ever seen one.

I almost want to wear it, but in that annoying ironic way us young people are into nowadays. I'll complete my ensemble with a smug hipster t-shirt and a hoodie with the Thundercats on it and DARE people to take me seriously!

Ah, knitting wank!

That is one hideous hat (the Look of Hate on the model's face says it all). If someone lovingly hand-knitted me one of those for Christmas, I'd sell all my belongings, change my name, and move to another country if that was what it took to never get a handmade gift from them again.

And is it me, or do most of the commenters descibing the hat as "fun!" or "whacky! (sic)" sound like the same person? Or is it just my poor stunned-by-fug brain's desperate attempt to find a reasonable explanation for so many positive comments?

I'm really only posting so I can use a knitting icon. And also to say that that is a massively ugly hat that I would be tempted to knit for myself just to wear to PTA meetings.

I'm home, recovering from surgery (end of week two... of six?). I'm nearly bored stupid. But I'm not sure I'm bored enough to knit that hat.

That said, whatever. If someone likes it and wants to knit it, more power to 'em?

Wow. So, my room mate started knitting a couple weeks ago and it's made me kind of desperate to get to a store for my own needles. (Not packing them when I moved over 500 miles from home = big mistake!) If someone said to me, "I will give you the needles and yarn to knit this hat and only this hat," I would have no other choice but to laugh heartily at them and find a new hobby.

Maybe it's because I haven't had any caffeine yet, but I want one. I have a thing for clothing that is so impossibly ugly that no one in their right mind could wear it seriously.

That is the sort of hat that I might produce on December 23rd if I got stuck with getting a gift for that one cousin no one likes, the one that had suddenly decided to show up for Xmas this year with no warning. With enough stress, enough alcohol, and no real affection for the person getting it, I could see myself making that.

Otherwise? Hell no.

The real question is: Why anyone would need a specialized pattern for a stocking cap with a fucktonne of pompoms sewn on? It's a hat. With pompoms sewn on. So really, just make a hat. And then sew some pompoms on. Voila-you are now Diane Von Furstenberg.

I love knitting wank! Thank you!
