Ugly knit hats provide hope for the masses!
Knitting Daily featured the Champagne Fizz Hat in its free patterns section.

Kristin@37 kicks off the comments:
I love to knit. I will knit practically anything. I will not knit this.

Too foul by far.

Some agree; others decry her negativity and ask where her sense of fun has gone. ShuriuL explains that the hataz are interrogating the hat from the wrong perspective:
Ladies! Everyone's missing the point! This hat was probably inspired by Diane Von Furstenberg's Fall 2009 Ready-To-Wear collection, which had lovely knit sweaters, knit tunics, knit scarves, and knit coats. Every model wore this hat with variations. The pompoms were much bigger and the overall silhouette made the models appear to be wearing hats similar to men's Renaissance hats. This collection was made touching and whimsical when most designers on either side of the Atlantic had chosen to make monotone, aggressive, boxy, conservative clothing that was more masculine and warrior-like than feminine and patterned. It was a seminal collection and spoke of hope, optimism, and fun when last year's collections came out in February and people were more depressed and scared than they are now.

As for me, I just hope I'm not on LynnR@15's gift list:
Oh, aren't some people just too precious for this rough world?

This hat is terrific fun! Not for everyone to knit, or wear. It is a technically simple knit, with plenty of scope in yarns and colour for some individual, creative expression. Daring older people will delight in shocking their stuffy peers and younger people will think it a cool novelty.

I shall knit loads of these for Christmas prezzies, for young and old alike.

Long live eccentric knitting! (Yes, I'm going to shock my peers!)

Rage, rage, against the knitting of the hat.

Knitters should burn and rage at fugly hats?

So am I to understand that people are interrogating this hat from the wrong perspective?

They are, indeed, interrogating this textile from the wrong perspective.

I suppose that perspective would be "anywhere in direct eye-line."

It looks like she's been attacked by Tribbles.

I think it looks like the hat's been drinking liquid soap and is now either hiccuping or throwing up.

In other words: holy shit, that is one fugly hat.

I think where this design went wrong was stopping at the hat. Ideally her pompoms should spread downward onto her jumper and pants, like a swarm of madly breeding creatures taking over her body.

Tribble-zombiocalypse, anybody?

See, I think it's the dumbest damn thing I've ever seen and I would happily knit it out of black, atomic tiki green and girly drink pink and wear it as a nightcap at SCA events... Right across from the hungover party camps.

It looks like a cat toy.

If I could knit, I might make it, add a few tassles, and give it to guests who I would like to see attacked from above by flying felines.

I admit that it's an ugly hat, but really? Shock your peers? I don't think anyone's going to turn up with the vapors. The closest they might come is laughing themselves sick.

Oh, I think they will be shocked. Shocked that you've been seen in public wearing that thing on your head.

Or they'll just laugh themselves sick. I know that's what I'm doing *wheeze*

Jesus Christ, I read that as "Chimpanzee Fuzz Hat" and imagined that it was patterned after a monkey's ass to warrant such a vehement response from that first commenter.

It is clearly time for me to go to bed.

So when I read 'Champagne Fizz Hat' I pictured some hat with dark gold fading into white. Maybe with a few little white dots to symbolize bubbles. So I thought the wank was about people who reaaaaally don't like booze.

I can say without a doubt I was not expecting what it actually was... but I laughed. That hat is too goofy to hate. 'Foul' is not exactly the term that comes to mind.

As far as I can tell, the only reason for it to be called that is because you have to have ingested a great deal of champagne to think it's attractive.

I would wear the shit out of that hat. I think it needs MORE poms, and ideally some on strings down the back as well.

I admit, though, when Ms. Thang called something named Champagne Fizz "foul", I was really hoping for more, I dunno, sexual imagery. I was half-expecting it to be a penis hat with a curly crocheted fountain of semen out the top or something.

Okay, now f_w and such have taught me that when someone says, "Everyone's missing the point!", to expect some off-the-wall, tongue-in-cheek explanation of whatever the topic is.

Then I googled it and found out the collection thing was real. Just LOOK at that hat!
