so wanky it's illegal!
Lime Crime Makeup is a line of eyeshadow and lipstick by fashion blogger Doe Deere (Xenia), mainly known for its strong and unusual pigments.

Recently Lime Crime's come under fire for allegedly repackaging pigments by other companies such as Beauty of the Earth and TKB Trading. As more and more blogs post their own comparisons, others pop up to speak about past customer service experiences, including a post from Lillian who claims that Xenia called her mother an "asshole" for buying a dress of hers that was hemmed with duct/gaffer tape.

There is apparently a long history of Xenia's shenanigans, sparked by comments on an article on Lime Crime in the Examiner. The comments haven't all been positive (a lot of them have been deleted), but most damning is a comment allegedly by Xenia calling her customers stupid for choosing her overpriced products.

This saga inspires Lipsticks and Lightsabers to start be part of the Mineral Makeup Mutiny (edit: this comment by [info]peonypavilion explains more) which highlights and supports companies that make their own mineral makeup. Meanwhile, there's been some investigation into her lipsticks, with Xenia's post on making lipstick (as well as the later one on making eyeshadows) attracting strong skepticism.

Yesterday, Xenia posted a video speaking out against the "haters", which rubs Lilian the wrong way as she feels she's unfairly being considered a liar. Xenia's response to her was (to Lilian's surprise) civil and composed; however, the same can't be said of Doe Deere commentor Mary, who thinks Lilian's only got a grudge because she's fat and that Lilian's on a power trip. (edit: Lillian's video about her issues with Xenia.)

Edit:
Xenia's entry with her video is closed to comments! (The ones already posted are still there though.)
eyeshadowsluts' posts about Lime Crime, as mentioned by [info]eleutheria.
Blasts from the past via [info]meanestbastard: The duct tape dress (Xenia's comments have been deleted), Where has the raffle money gone?, "violation of copyright", the mystery raffle winner, her journal's gone friends-only, relisting things that didn't sell. Oh and also Internet & copyright law fail.

Edit 2:
An insider's look at LBG drama. (The post itself is drama-free but does give some background.)

Edit 3:
A lone objective voice about this whole shabang-a-bang.

I'm somewhat surprised Xenia hasn't found this yet and threatened to take me down! does [info]otf_wank do anon comments?

Edit 4:
I posted a non-wanky version of this on MetaFilter (mainly to highlight the video of Miss K/Aromaleigh making eyeshadow) and they call shenanigans:

For the record; I've been making mineral makeup for years. I never sold it through my company, because getting FDA approval for makeup is a nightmare, and product liability insurance without FDA approval isn't going to happen. And operating in the US without product liability insurance is just stupid. That said, nobody *but* the big mineral makeup companies have gone through the FDA process, because they're the only ones that can pony up the 50k per product it takes to do so, and have the clean rooms to do manufacturing.

I can almost guarantee you that not a single one of these "boutique manufacturers" have FDA approval, or the million dollar clean labs that are required for that approval. These are folks that are buying stuff from vendors and mixing it up in coffee grinders in their kitchen, and STILL charging a 1000% markup...and you've got nobody to sue when it turns out their product hasn't been tested and came from a contaminated area of China.

All that is a lead up to this: Nobody on the market is just buying stuff from TKB (whom I love...they are a fantastic source, and their products are top-notch) and reselling it as "makeup". They may repackage and resell it as "kits" with instructions on how to make it...but nothing from TKB is "wear-ready".

This, my friends, is a marketing campaign, and nothing more. This is someone trying to stir outrage and turn it into dollars for her company. Every little vendor who sells mineral makeup does the same thing this person does. They blend it, they design colors, yadda yadda. Nobody is buying bags of chromium green and selling it the way it came from the wholesaler.

I call shenanigans, and I say this as someone who has been making mineral makeup for almost a decade. This isn't education, this isn't a movement, this is an ad campaign.

Bookmarking TKB and Beauty from the Earth for future plundering, daaaaaaamn.

(the only mineral makeup I can get around here without going a half hour-plus out of my way is the foundation-type shit, give me some fucking COLORS please)

Also, whoever uses "oh yeah well you're just mad because you're fat" in an argument automatically loses.

Oh hey, LimeCrime! I remember you showed up in a previous wank that touched on make-up (can't recall what it was exactly but the main character had bright pink hair and apparently was a trust fund girl who claimed to work or something while flitting about New York and Paris?), and you didn't look so hot then, either. I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same!

Funny, though, that I only know about you from a wank, and here you are, wanking it up again. Oh, LimeCrime, you're reminding me why I never bother with mineral make-up, even beyond the fact that I rarely wear make-up in the first place.

Oh wow, this comes as no surprise at all to me, speaking as someone who had Xenia on their LJ friends list from about 2004 - 2007. I used to watch some of the other "Little Big Girls" designers as well, I remember the shillbidding drama coming out. I'd hoped she'd finally mended her wanky ways, but I guess not.

I hadn't heard the full story about Maskara (at the end of this post) before though, that's hilarious!

My Mum bought a dress from her and when it arrived we were shocked to find it was hemmed with Gaffa tape (Duct tape) but we still left good feedback and so on because we don't like to make a fuss.

What condition would it have to have been in to warrant a fuss, then? Actually on fire? Wrapped around a dead marmoset?

Just as a note, the Mineral Makeup Mutiny was actually started by Kristen Leigh Bell of Aromaleigh. And it was started in part due to a flap with another company that's suspected of repackaging, although in her case it was because said company had, according to her, been lifting descriptions, sell text, and specific product names from Aromaleigh. It appears she's taken down the posts in her blog about this, but Fresco Phyrra also had some run-ins with that company, as detailed here:
http://frescophyrra.blogspot.com/2009/09/conflicting-information-on-orglamix.html
http://frescophyrra.blogspot.com/2009/10/orglamix-sent-me-cease-desist.html
http://frescophyrra.blogspot.com/2009/10/more-disturbing-information-on-orglamix.html
http://frescophyrra.blogspot.com/2009/11/cease-desist-letter-from-cheri-tracy-of.html
She had another post up in which she compared some of this company's colors with some of Aromaleigh's colors and questioned whether they might also be repackaging. However, that post seems to be gone now as well, and between that and the removed Aromaleigh posts, I think the repackaging issue is the one that this company is causing problems over.

(As another note of wanka interest, Aromaleigh's products are great, but Miss K can be a bit of a drama queen. She threw a big fit in her blog last spring when people took issue with her naming a collection "Spring Solstice," although she later took the post down, and she once chewed out a customer for not giving her a "proper" sort of response in regards to a customer-service issue. I have the impression that some of that sort of thing also goes down in the Aromaleigh forums, though I don't read them regularly and you have to be a registered user to get to several of the categories.)

On the one hand: It's sad to find out that Doe Deere/Xenia is such a wanktastic person, since I've been interested in her style for at least 4 years even though I've never bought from her and was obviously never interested enough to find out how two-faced* she is.

On the other: Holy crap guys tkbtrading.com is my new TVTropes! I could look at the shiny happy colors all day long, distracted only by the educational PDFs and charts about lakes vs dyes vs pigments.

*Question: does use of two-face separate from Harvey Dent automatically invoke a variant of Snacky's Law? It's an obvious way to describe her, but it's so high school of me.

Wow, why didn't I think of doing the repackage-and-markup of mineral powders? The mixing looks like fun (even if I'd have to wear goggles along with the mask). I dunno though, my only experience with "minerals" was a small sample a few years ago that felt like iron filings on my eyelids. Owch.

I don't get it.

Someone buys pigments from a wholesaler, blends them with other agents to make useable, ready-to-wear product, and sells it at a huge markup.

What part of this is not standard practice?
