So. Much. Stupid.
This guy is campaigning for his LEGITIMATE RIGHT to send text messages during class, over the protests of his "tyrannical" professors. There is tremendous wanking, scroll to any random point on the page and you will find some. Be warned, when you stare into the stupid, the stupid, entitled fuckwad stares into you.

I realize he's paying for his own education, but so are many of the other students in the classroom. Texting can be distracting to others, who have the right to a productive learning environment. It can also be distracting to the instructor, who has to create and foster that environment for the students.

So yeah, you mess with that, and I'm taking your grade down a few points. Deal.

Attending college or university is a privilege, not a right, asswipe. You're only entitled to 12 years of public schooling. After that, you're on your own. I'm sure U of M (whichever campus you're at) would be more than happy to show you to the door and give your seat to someone who doesn't disrespect professors and disrupt the learning of other students.

Honestly, when I would get bored in a class in undergrad I'd take in a Sudoku puzzle. You're not bothering any one else and it looks like you're taking notes.

2. While many readers may view me as an “asshole” that is too “entitled” and “self-absorbed” to care about my education, your assumptions are just that…assumptions. I graduated valedictorian from high school and transferred to UoM: Dearborn with a 3.75 GPA.

THE ENTITLED STUPID IS STARING SO HARD AT ME I NEED SUNGLASSES.

Seriously what the fuck? Ok, so he was valedictorian. *twirls finger* in the grand scheme of things, I doubt it matters that much. And that bit about transferring from a community college wth a 3.75 GPA?

Dude.

If you apply yourself in college it's not hard at all to snag a really good GPA. I did some bird courses in a community college and walked out with a 4.08 going into university transfer. Guess what? That's when I hit the hard slog and my grades dropped to more realistic levels. :P

In most instances when it comes to colleges and universities, I find that they operate under a backwards business model. As a rule of thumb, customers come first. After all, satisfied customers means increased revenue and likeliness that references will be acquired blahblah blah more crap

The thing is, state-funded institutions in particular get a fair chunk of cash from the state government, not from the tuition-payers. There's a reason why it costs $40k a year to go to Harvard and only $8k to hit a state uni.

So his very idea that they operate on a 'business model' is false, since they actually exist as quasi-public institutions and therefore serve the public purpose of relatively broad access to higher education. This sort of public-spirited purpose goes back to the days of land-grant colleges.

He does make a valid point that students are treated with relatively little respect but this has nothing to do with the common courtesy expected of students that they'll pay attention in class and not blatantly use their electronics to distract themselves.

le sigh.

Dear lord, it's like that kid has never considered what professors have to deal with on a regular basis. It's like he's never considered that rules like "10% off the grade when caught texting" might have been put in place for his benefit. (And I seriously doubt that the grade deduction is for a first-time or mild offense.)

Also, I like how Raw W-something commented somewhere around a third of the way down the page that texting isn't distracting for other students unless they have ADD. I mean, what?! I dunno, but I always found it was super easy to be distracted by someone doing something unusual during a lecture, even when I was fully engaged with the class. Texting or websurfing ranked up there.

My favorite was this one girl who I had several classes with over a few different semesters and who would break out a water bottle in the middle of class and one of those packets of flavor/vitamin powder. She'd proceed to pour the powder into the bottle, then shake it for a good minute or two. It was so loud and obnoxious and I inevitably missed parts of the professor's lecture because of it. I was so happy when I walked by said prof's office one time and overheard the girl getting scolded about her behaviour ♥

I'm in my last semester at a community college right now and this doesn't surprise me at all. Between my fellow students and the students I know at the local university, this sort of entitlement runs rampant.

I know one girl who got into a very competitive limited access media program and proceeded to complain when she didn't automatically get fantastic grades.

I go to UofM Ann Arbor, and I think it just started the optional rule of professors not allowing their students to use their laptops while in class. I have an acquaintance who complained about it because she wants to go on Facebook whenever she gets bored in class. *rolls eyes* Another girl was complaining because she records lectures on her laptop. I see the legit complaint about the latter because I use my voice recorder whenever I can't keep up when I'm writing notes down. I would type my notes in class, but I'm not that quick of a typist either.

But complaining about texting? Fuck you, you entitled asshat.

I can't wait to be a professor in part because I'm very tempted to have the policy of reading a student's text if I see him/her texting while I'm lecturing. Of course, I will warn the students not to do this on the first day or two of class. The same would apply to Twitter, Facebook, or whatever social network will be popular.

I just wouldn't completely ban laptops because a lot of people are faster at typing than writing down their notes on paper

Back when I was in university, one of our teachers gave us a lecture about the importance of having your cellphone off (while I set mine to silent, I don't carry a watch, so I need it on, but I'd never answer it), someone's phone rang. The LOOK he gave him was *awesome*.

I just... pay attention in class. I also sit near the front because my vision is crap and chalkboards can be pain to read.

Of course, I haven't been inside a classroom for four years or more (distance education is joy, and I can raid in 'class' during our very rare chat sessions), so maybe I'm missing something.

He does have a glimmer of a point; not so much sending as receiving texts, if the school has a system that sends emergency announcements through text messages. If there's an emergency, such as a murder has just occurred in the building where you're currently in class, it would be nice to be able to receive that news. Of course, it would also be nice to have an alert system that isn't entirely text-message based, for the people who don't use their texting service and never signed up for the campus's text alerts...

Texting is distracting, motherfucker. Particularly when it's a small class, in a small classroom, where people are already having trouble because they never take notes because writing is HAAAARD. (I tried to let them use laptops to take notes, but a) it was distracting to other students and b) people promptly tried to use laptops to cheat during exams).

My "favorite" example so far this year was the girl who told me she couldn't stop texting when I told her to because she had to know whether her boyfriend was going to break up with her. I told her that someone who would dump her by text message is no prize and to put it away.

How hard is it to get that when you go to a school you agree to their rules? Yes, even if they change. Your choice as a consumer is to go to a different school. Openly not paying attention to an instructor is rude to both the instructor and the students who are there to learn. Why? Easy: you distract the instructor, cause a disruption to the flow of the class, the instructor has to gather thoughts and the students have to wait for instructor to get back on track. No one gives a shit how much you think you paid to prove you're too smart to have to pay attention in class. Leave the room if you're that addicted to your phone.

On a funny note, I had a student in class once who accidentally left their phone on and was appalled when it rang. I jokingly said I should get to answer it -- she was so apologetic she practically shoved it at me, so I had a funny, short conversation with her friend and a really fun rest of the class. Not all of today's students are entitled a-holes, which is really good reason to try to keep those who are from ruining their experience.

It's usually the professor whose cell phone goes off during class for me nowadays. x)

What a stupid boob. Did his parents protest not being allowed to pass notes in class so I can blame the inflated entitlement on something? Jesus. Actually, that reminds me of students bitching about not being allowed to smoke in class when I was in college-- "We're adults!" and "We paid for school, why can't we smoke?"

I tell my students that if their phone rings in class, they're going to owe me an accurate melodic dictation of their cell phone ring. Haven't had any problems with them yet.

You are right that it is your right to text or not during class. It is mine to bust your ass outa my classroom.
Go ahead, start a campaign. Make my day, punk. I’ve got tenure.

Tenure? So, essentially, you have the ability to fuck around with no consequences? Job security at it’s finest. Congratulations, asshole. Oh and by the way, it’s not your classroom. It’s the universities.

You mean: “it’s the university’s” “Universities” is the plural of “university”.

Perhaps you were too busy texting during English class to learn the correct use of the apostrophe?

Win!

Every professor I've ever had made special note in the syllabus that cell phones were to be turned off during class. If you have a situation going on where you might need to be contacted during class time, set it to vibrate and leave the class if you get a call. No texting during class.
Every single one.
I even had professors who would answer a student's phone during class time.
Despite this, I had one class where a student texted all during class. I'm not sure the prof ever noticed, but I sure did. That and the fact that she always took her shoes off was very distracting.
Seriously, what is so important that you can't wait until class is over to tell someone? I only ever used my phone if I was going to be somewhere other than where I was usually when it was time for my Mom to pick me up.
There's also the potential of cheating. Students would text answers to friends or take photos of the test and pass them around.
Personally, I get along just fine without a cell phone now.

So...you're dumb enough to be rude to the person in charge of your academic grades.

You're too stupid to attend college. Move along.

Wow, what a pathetic wanker. I mean, I know that tertiary education is more flexible about things (on a number of occasions I've eaten breakfast or lunch in classes and lectures, but I study design, and we're allowed to be pretty relaxed as long as we're still productive, and coffee breaks during classes are very productive) but if it's made clear something's a no-no in classes or lectures because your university or department has decided it's a distraction, them's the breaks. Live with it, it's higher education, not a fucking democracy.
