Once in my university Spanish class, somebody's cell phone went off, and the prof breezed by her desk, swooped up the phone, and answered it with a stream of rapid-fire Spanish, explaining that [student] was in class and unavailable, but that the caller could try back in an hour. We could all hear the person on the other end going "What? WHAT? Who are you? Where's [student]?"

After that people turned off their cell phones quite religiously upon crossing the classroom threshold.

I had a professor who did this, except he had Japanese spoken to him. While taking a summer class, I had forgotten to turn my phone's ringer off, and when a call -- the third already that had interrupted our class, eep -- came from my Japanese boss/landlady, I immediately turned off the ringer but he demanded to be able to answer it. Realizing who it was, I gave it to him. Apparently he didn't like that said boss/landlady couldn't speak English, because his attempts to communicate with her only made him more frustrated.

I called her back after the class, and she said that she didn't want to speak English because "some crazy man" was on the phone and she thought that it had been stolen. we laughed XD;

That's BRILLIANT.

I would never have the guts to do that.

Usually, if a phone goes off, my students are so mortified that they dive to shut it off and then apologize profusely. And it almost never happens to the same person twice.

I did have one kid whose phone rang during a quiet moment in the class--and his ringtone was Cartman saying "You're a moron," over and over.

It was awesome.
