Yo Lysacek, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish...
Yevgeny Plushenko, Russian superstar, lost the Men's Figure Skating gold to Evan Lysacek last week. He's been throwing a fit ever since, including stepping on the gold medal winner's platform during the award ceremony.

Today, he took the whining to another level, and awarded himself the platinum medal.

ETA: Since I submitted this yesterday, Plushenko has denied having anything to do with the medal. Also, I must have linked to the boring article with no comments. Total writeup fail, guys. D:

And Elvis Stojko is siding with him. But I can't give a crap about what Stojko thinks since I heard him say that gay men are ruining men's figure skating.

There really is a disgusting undercurrent of machoism in the sport. They're so desperate to prove they're not a ~*girly*~ sport that they take it out on anyone perceived as being effeminate enough to "perpetuate the stereotype", whether they're actually gay or not. And if they are actually gay, then they're considered even more "fair game".

Ugh...it's bad enough my brother-in-law's convinced his son to be scared of male figure skaters due to his own homophobia. :(

See also: Rudy Galindo. :(

To be honest, I'm a huge skating fan and have been since I was very little, but that kind of bullshit turned me off of men's skating.

What was the issue with Galindo? I know he claimed at one point that he was marked down based on his sexuality, but after watching his performances, I'd have to say he was marked down because... well... they really weren't very good. :( Was there some other controversy I was unaware of?

I noticed that quite a few of them were wearing Manly Clothing without glitter. A couple looked like they'd skated right out of The Gap.

So I was glad the winner wore feathers and sequins, straight or not :D

It seems to be the same way in regular non-ice dancing. I'm reminded of Nigel Lithgoe on So You Think You Can Dance, and the way he berates, humiliates, and otherwise bullies male dancers who he doesn't think are macho enough. And don't get me started on the way the show treated a pair of gay male ballroom dancers when they tried out.

That comment does suck, though I'd heard the reason why he was mad is because the person who won didn't attempt anything particularly difficult, and the person who didn't win did?

I'm not really following a lot of it, mostly just curiosity about the hockey stomping.

From what I hear, the US dude skated a clean program with nothing higher than a triple (NB still hard!), while Plushenko skated a wobbly program with a quad jump in it. Sure, the quad's worth more points than one of the triples, but the bobbles still get deductions...

Figure skating has always had tension between artistry and a clean program vs. athleticism and difficult jumps. Women are generally encouraged toward the former and men toward the latter, which is one of the reasons I stopped seriously watching years ago.

From what I saw of the men's programs, it seems that lately men's ice skating has become men's ice falling due to them trying for jumps they can't complete. I'm all for giving props if you can do crazy hard jumps and still actually skate the rest of your program.

If they're going to look winded halfway through, not do any connections, and a good third of them bobble crazily and end up on their ass, I'd rather not see quads.

Stojko is the most lacklustre performer, I swear. I mean, watch Kurt Browning (okay so I has a bias, I met him and he is amazing) or Scott Hamilton. Watch their amazing footwork, and watch their general demeanour. Compare Stojko to those guys. Feel sorry for Stojko.

ALL HE SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO DO IS JUMP GOOD, 'kay thanks bye. He doesn't do footwork, and when he does it's like weaksauce. Technical elements alone do not a program make, dude.

He said WHAT about gay skaters?!

OH ELVIS STOJKO, NO

Why is it that all of my favorite skaters are turning into (or have always been?) massive assholes? First Plushenko (who I loved, if only for the Sex Bomb routine), now Stojko. All I need now is to hear about some douchery Kurt Browning has been involved in, and my skating heart can break. ;_;
