Yo Lysacek, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish...
Yevgeny Plushenko, Russian superstar, lost the Men's Figure Skating gold to Evan Lysacek last week. He's been throwing a fit ever since, including stepping on the gold medal winner's platform during the award ceremony.

Today, he took the whining to another level, and awarded himself the platinum medal.

ETA: Since I submitted this yesterday, Plushenko has denied having anything to do with the medal. Also, I must have linked to the boring article with no comments. Total writeup fail, guys. D:

There really is a disgusting undercurrent of machoism in the sport. They're so desperate to prove they're not a ~*girly*~ sport that they take it out on anyone perceived as being effeminate enough to "perpetuate the stereotype", whether they're actually gay or not. And if they are actually gay, then they're considered even more "fair game".

Ugh...it's bad enough my brother-in-law's convinced his son to be scared of male figure skaters due to his own homophobia. :(

See also: the "joking" commentary that Weir should either get gender tested or skate for the women's team.

"They think all the boys that skate will end up like him," a visibly upset Dorothy [Hamill] said.

"'We should make him pass a gender test at this point,'" Dorothy read, getting very choked up at the broadcasters' homophobic comments. "What do you think of that?"

"Every little boy should be so lucky as to turn into me," Johnny said without batting an eyelash. "And that's all I have to say."

From here.

And this is why Johnny Weir is awesome.

Aww, Dorothy Hamill. I think they should skate together too.

The whiners can STFU. Weir being creatively flamboyant is part of his Awesome Showmanship (TM) package. His performances would lose a lot without it, I think, and the fact that he has no problem with indulging it, despite the crap he gets, makes him totally fierce.

Wait- Lady Gaga was actually going to come if he skated in the exhibition? I'm now even more depressed that he was totally undermarked.

See also: Rudy Galindo. :(

To be honest, I'm a huge skating fan and have been since I was very little, but that kind of bullshit turned me off of men's skating.

What was the issue with Galindo? I know he claimed at one point that he was marked down based on his sexuality, but after watching his performances, I'd have to say he was marked down because... well... they really weren't very good. :( Was there some other controversy I was unaware of?

I'm wondering that too, and wondering if it was the same reasoning for him being moved from pairs to singles so quickly.

I noticed that quite a few of them were wearing Manly Clothing without glitter. A couple looked like they'd skated right out of The Gap.

So I was glad the winner wore feathers and sequins, straight or not :D

It seems to be the same way in regular non-ice dancing. I'm reminded of Nigel Lithgoe on So You Think You Can Dance, and the way he berates, humiliates, and otherwise bullies male dancers who he doesn't think are macho enough. And don't get me started on the way the show treated a pair of gay male ballroom dancers when they tried out.

I didn't watch this last season because it was a conflict with other TV (I mean, it's a fine little summer show, but whose bright idea was it to show the thing in the fall?), but from everything I heard about the judging and Nigel being even worse than he was in S5 (which, considering the "and he wants to take his WOMAN" comment to Brandon, that's hard to do), I definitely didn't miss it. I love the dancing, but that motherfucker needs a boot in the head damnquick.

May he be visited by the vengeful spirit of Rudolf Nuryev. Who was about as macho as possible, and also gay (or bi? or possibly omnisexual?).

I think my reaction to this statement is to go read a lot of bad fanfic AUs about gay figure skaters.
