Yo Lysacek, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish...
Yevgeny Plushenko, Russian superstar, lost the Men's Figure Skating gold to Evan Lysacek last week. He's been throwing a fit ever since, including stepping on the gold medal winner's platform during the award ceremony.

Today, he took the whining to another level, and awarded himself the platinum medal.

ETA: Since I submitted this yesterday, Plushenko has denied having anything to do with the medal. Also, I must have linked to the boring article with no comments. Total writeup fail, guys. D:

*looks around* Am I the only one who thought he genuinely was better, despite his (admittedly stupid, abrasive and annoying) attitude?

I can't remember anything from the last skate besides Takahashi's "What the hell was he thinking?" costume, so I dunno.

Well, I'm really only waiting for JE to recruit him the second he gets back anyway, so XD;

Before this I never really felt one way or another about him in terms of his attitude. while he's a decent enough skater, I've felt he's been somewhat overrated. Alexei Yagudin skated circles around him IMO and I think it's telling that dude really only started winning hardcore after Yagudin retired.

I thought his performance in Vancouver was typical of his usual stuff, technically awesome but the artistry so-so. One of the reasons I've really lost interest in skating in the last few years is this stupid arms race in the technical department because of the backlash from SLC and the new scoring system. Skating is not just about insane jumps and not falling on your ass. It has to be a balance, and Lysacek just plain beat him on that IMO.

All of this.

And especially the part about Yagudin. Winter, Man in the Iron Mask and Delicious Fanservice Overcome are still my favorite programs.

I used to be a huge fan of Plushenko before this jackassery surfaced, and I actually found him to be a good balance of artistry and technical prowess. He was the sort of skater who I couldn't keep my eyes off of because he was just so darned interesting and expressive. YMMV, of course, and I might be being overly biased just because of the sheer unadulterated awesome win that was Sex Bomb.

Damnit, Plushenko, why did you have to be such an outrageous dick? ;_; Ah well, hopefully Patrick Chan will turn out well. ^_^

Adding that I don't disagree with you that his Vancouver performance wasn't really as artistic as it could have been, and that Evan did a better job on that end of things (though I thought Takahashi smoked them both out of the water. Holy crap, I want that man in ways that are not even remotely platonic).

YES. It's not about being a jumping robot, it's about making the jumps and the spins and all of it come together in something smooth and beautiful.

The BBC have trained me to follow the feet, and well, Lysacek had the footwork. Plushenko had more wobbling than you'd really want in your gold medallist going on.

I sort of agree... I personally thought that both Evan and Plushenko were extremely close in terms of polish, artistry and technical skill, so I would have felt either deserved a gold medal.

Except that I would have given it to Takahashi anyway because he's just that awesome and hot. XD

I wanted him to win, but to be honest his free skate was a bit wobbly in comparison.

But Lysacek's pretty hot so win-win in my book. XD

I would have been happy with either of them winning gold. That said, in the actual performances, Lysacek did beat him fair and square, with much better footwork and cleaner jumps, and a combination of jumps and choreography that was more than demanding enough to make up for the lack of a quad.

A lot of people seem to react more positively to Plushenko's showmanship -- he flirts with the audience as he skates and people like that, while Lysacek is a bit more reserved and introspective while he skates. But if showmanship were the critical point, they'd both have been trounced by Johnny Weir.

It was, essentially, a photo-finish, but in the slo-mos you can see all the things that got Plushy docked points. In a way, I almost wish the gold had gone to Plushenko just because then we wouldn't have had all this drama. Lysacek would have been every bit as ecstatic about winning silver.
