Yo Lysacek, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish...
Yevgeny Plushenko, Russian superstar, lost the Men's Figure Skating gold to Evan Lysacek last week. He's been throwing a fit ever since, including stepping on the gold medal winner's platform during the award ceremony.

Today, he took the whining to another level, and awarded himself the platinum medal.

ETA: Since I submitted this yesterday, Plushenko has denied having anything to do with the medal. Also, I must have linked to the boring article with no comments. Total writeup fail, guys. D:

Honestly... Plushenko left a bad taste in my mouth the minute he made his "If you don't do a quad, it's not figure skating anymore, it's just dancing," comments, and then even more with his antics on the podium. He's an excellent skater, to be certain, but a sore loser, and it reminded me a LOT of Nancy Kerrigan's comments while waiting for the medal ceremony the year she came in second to Oksana Baiul. If I remember right, they were redoing Oksana's makeup, and Nancy stood there and groused that they shouldn't bother because "she was just going to cry it all off again anyway."

If the quad was a required element it'd be a different story, but it wasn't. I can't see throwing away a performance on a jump you could conceivably lose a lot of points on, either by falling or bobbling on the landing.

IIRC, they weren't redoing her makeup-- that was a rumor that went around. What they were doing was trying to find the Ukranian national anthem. I wanted to slap her. Kind of want to do that with Plushenko too.

Oh really? I hadn't heard that, but damn, that makes her comments even more heartless. Damn, Nancy.

It's definitely what the broadcasters said that night-- I remember watching it live.

I know what's it's like to lose or come in second, but seriously--how hard is it to stand there and keep your damn mouth shut?

I've never understood people who have to shit on the winner's good time just because they can't stand to lose.

I know. I was looking at Lysacek's twitter today, he's been so happy (the exclamation point seems to be his favorite keyboard key). I hate that Plushenko's decided he needed to shit on his moment as much as he has.

The fact that he's clearly not letting BooHoo Plushenko's little toddler-tantrum rain on his parade makes me very happy.

If Plushenko's that much of a dick it may make victory a little sweeter...

He has just been a ball of joy since his short program that it is hard not to be excited with him!

I still can't forgive him for some of the comments he made about Weir back in '06 or '07, though...

I missed his little hop onto the top of the podium, but when I came back into the room to watch the actual ceremony my first comment to my husband was "Wow, someone's bitter about second place."

Even before he opened his mouth it was obvious he was pissed off.

Heh I didn't see the backstage part, I just saw him storm off the rink while Lysacek and Takahashi were still having photos taken. Awkward.

I'd like to send some of the dancers I know to beat him up. Dancing professionally takes incredible athleticism.

As far as I can see, it's a jump he can't do properly because he looks scared and wobbly when he lands. It's not ski-jumping - you are supposed to jump neatly and confidently and not just 'lots'.

He used to land jumps better, so my best guess is this is what happens when someone retires for 3 years and comes back expecting to be given gold.

The first time I heard Nancy Kerrigan being interviewed I suffered from all sorts of cognative dissonance: she had this ice-princess presence in performance and when she opened her mouth out came bad grammar, lack of thought, and nasal intonations that set my hair on end.
