Yo Lysacek, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish...
Yevgeny Plushenko, Russian superstar, lost the Men's Figure Skating gold to Evan Lysacek last week. He's been throwing a fit ever since, including stepping on the gold medal winner's platform during the award ceremony.

Today, he took the whining to another level, and awarded himself the platinum medal.

ETA: Since I submitted this yesterday, Plushenko has denied having anything to do with the medal. Also, I must have linked to the boring article with no comments. Total writeup fail, guys. D:

Man, considering the ladies across the board were more consistent in landing their jumps in the short program, even Mao's triple axel, and didn't weep with joy after skating a good program (except for the one girl whose tears had almost nothing to do with skating) you'd think they be the perfect "manly" standard those guys are looking for.

There was not a single dry eye in my house after we watched Joannie Rochette. Then today I read that she was whispering "C'est pour toi, maman," during the kiss-and-cry and I started bawling all over again.

Since you mentioned Mao, I gotta ask -- I don't know much about skating (though I like to watch it) but I'm in Japan right now, and everything is just 'MAO MAO MAO'. So... is she a good skater on an international scale? I mean, I can see by watching her that she's pretty talented, but I don't know how she rates compared to the rest of the world.

(Seriously, the Mao madness is... kinda funny really. I watched the qualifiers for the Olympics, and it was like -- someone's routine! Finished, cut to Mao-chan sitting on a bench looking bored. Another routine! Cut to Mao-chan... sitting on a bench looking bored. Another routine! Mao has started her warmups, she is jumping down a corridor. Boing, boing, boing...)

She won 2008 world championship, so yeah. She's pretty much the only one right now capable of challenging Kim Yu-Na.

She's the second woman to complete the triple axel at the Olympics; that is pretty exclamation-mark worthy. (Miki Ando has actually landed a quad in competition, but that was on the junior circuit.)
