Yo Lysacek, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish...
Yevgeny Plushenko, Russian superstar, lost the Men's Figure Skating gold to Evan Lysacek last week. He's been throwing a fit ever since, including stepping on the gold medal winner's platform during the award ceremony.

Today, he took the whining to another level, and awarded himself the platinum medal.

ETA: Since I submitted this yesterday, Plushenko has denied having anything to do with the medal. Also, I must have linked to the boring article with no comments. Total writeup fail, guys. D:

Actually, yes, you do win silver. No one is entitled to gold, everyone wins what the quality of their performance earns them.

What you describe may, indeed, be the truth of the attitudes involved -- but those attitudes are comprised of equal parts bad sportsmanship, conduct unbecoming of an Olympic champion, massive ego, and butthurt, not the actual spirit of Olympic competition. Also, while I don't care for Lysacek, I have to say he's handling this far more gracefully than I would have under the circumstances. If Plushenko had been talking that smack about my gold medal winning performance, they'd have found him floating face down in Vancouver Sound with a toepick embedded in his skull by now.
