We could do with a little more Olympic wankery, I figured!

NBC reporter attemps to interview Dutch gold medalist Sven Kramer after he won the 5000 meters speedskating event, and starts the interview with the question of who he is, and Sven wants to know if she's stupid.

Comments range from "She got what was coming to her" and "awesome stick it to the dumbass american media!" to "What an arrogant prick. I hope he realizes his 15 minutes of fame won't last long." and "what a douchebag. he doesn't even play a real sport."

I guess skating really really quickly isn't a sport, then. ANYWAY, yesterday, Sven Kramer had to skate again, and is pretty much the expected winner of the 10000 meters.

Until he gets disqualified for moving into the wrong lane. Quite a lot of the commenters, though, would still to talk about whether or not he'd been a rude arrogant douchebag and if the reporter was useless or simply doing her job. And some blame his parents: "I have never said anything so rude to another person, nor did I teach my children to speak to other people that way." and one person thinks Sven's coach should be given the medal, even though the coach was the one who told him to go in the wrong lane: "The GOLD medal should have been given to the coach for putting up with such an arrogant, cocky, mouthy and STUPID kramer"

And then there's some American-bashing: "Could the americans in this article, who didnt check their facts, stick to their own nations webpages and rant about their version of the truth?"

Ohnotheydidnt weighs in on the matter as well but it quickly goes into "he's good-looking enough that he could verbally abuse me and i wouldn't care, so long as i got to slap dat ass" territory. Maybe the skintight suits involved in speedskating bring that out in people.

Do you get CTV? Their coverage has been pretty awesome, if a little bit overly excited about Canadian hopefuls (not to mention a horrible habit of building the athletes up in commentary only to have them fall down at a critical moment... I've started screaming SHUT UP SHUT UP whenever they start saying, "Oh, this jump/run/etc is one of his/her strong points..."). But they definitely know their stuff and are extremely knowledgeable about all the athletes and events.

I think CTV is pretty good too, even if they are a bit overly excited about Canadians. In any case, it can't be worst than the French Canadian coverage where commentator won't shut the fuck up for one minute. God they're stupid and pretty much useless.

LOL, really? Haven't been checking them out myself, but sorry to hear they're annoying. :/

I've really enjoyed commentators talking about how difficult elements of a sport are.

This. I've really appreciated having someone explaining why one jump is considered more difficult than another, or pointing out the flaws in someone's run, or whatever. It got to the point where, when I actually attended the ice dancing in person, I sort of missed the chirpy voices explaining precisely why Virtue and Moir were performing awesomely. :-)

When I attended the mens I kept needing to headdesk when the person sitting behind me kept up a running - and often incorrect - commentary. I was contemplating sneaking over to the press section beside me and absorbing some zen.

Yelling SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP is normal around here too. I especially hate it when they go "we're guaranteed for a medal" when there's like four athletes to go. Other than that though, yeah they've been pretty awesome.

It got so bad on the snowboarding cross... even the commentators began to notice it. I had to restrain myself from taking the bus over there and gagging that one female commentator, who I swear had a curse on her that made Canadian snowboarders fall down as soon as she opened her mouth.

Oh god, I have hated the CTV coverage. They're fine during the actual events, but all the in between stuff with people in the studio has been absolutely terrible. Except for Brian Williams, who will always win no matter what network he's on.

(That said, CTV on a bad day is apparently amazing in comparison to what NBC has been doing with all their tape-delay and god knows what else.)

Yeah, I must admit that their desk coverage has been quite annoying... although the Fan Choice Awards and the sections where they get athletes trying new sports are pretty entertaining.

Having said that, I sort of give them a pass because of the way the whole thing is set up over multiple channels; unless there's a major delay, they can't just switch to another event, so they have to fill up the gap times (e.g. course regrooming, ice resurfacing) somehow. I just change to TSN/OLN/Sportsnet and back again. ^_^
