There's a feature being implemented on LJ to allow you to hide certain names on your "friends of" list.

badlydrawnjeff doesn't like it and doesn't want it to be implemented.

midnightmadness wants to know why.

Splurt.

And I don't see how the hell allowing people the right to hide their own personal information is imposing their standards on anyone else. Those of you who live in the People's Republic of McHippieland where no one can possibly hurt you because they found out that you are interested in underage gay vampire bdsm slash or have a psychiatric condition can still bare all to the world.

*sporfle*

Really.

The threads are too long though. I lost interest.

I don't get why [info]badlydrawnjeff thinks everything should be public. I mean, I write private entries, sometimes about what pisses me off. And sometimes, it violates confidences. Why do I need to advertise that to the rest of the world? Why shouldn't we have the choice to keep some things private? Why do I want to advertise that some cholo called "kkk_membership" friended me?

Livejournal is not a huge community of a million journals; it's a metacomm. Just as most real-life cities are. And we should have the option of not advertising everything about ourselves to the world.

Wasn't there a case last year, or the year before, where a slashwriter was outed to her employer and got fired?

MsScribe was. It was nasty.

IIRC, either the asshat outed Ms. Scribe to her employer or Ms. Scribe pre-emptively told him, and he basically didn't care. Then the asshat went to the press. Since the employer is a politician, and Ms. Scribe didn't want him to get in trouble, she resigned.

I think [info]wayfarer mentioned losing a job for a similar reason, but I don't have details on that.

My guess is that the old system works fine for *him* therefore no other LJ user could possibly have a problem with it.

God, what the hell happened to openness and honesty and not letting those who lurk in the shadows define us? *sigh*

*sporfle* Oh, the lies, the lies, how shall we ever live with the LIES?!?!

Then why bother having pseudonyms in LJ at all? Why not go ahead and list your real name? Complete with your real contact info in the user info? If you truly have nothing to hide that shouldn't matter, should it?

What part of opting out did he not get? Just leave that option for us paranoid folk and look down your nose at us. =P

Makes me wonder what Jeff fears will happen. All his friends of list will dump him like spoiled milk???

Jesus H. Christ on hot buttered toast with jam, get OVER it buddy! What I really don't understand is why badlycoherentdrawnjeff thinks that being able to selectively block certain things is any more "secretive and dishonest" than creating multiple journals to seperate things out or by hiding a friends-of list. I mean really, the fuck? Though the Republic of McHippie Land, ooooh that was choice.
