Seattle's delicate tastebuds
Seattleite [info]killthief is disappointed in Seattle's lack of chain restaurants.

[info]seattle is disappointed in her lack of taste; her appalling lack of taste.

::wistful sigh:: Can I trade place with her? Please? Pretty please with syrup-laden processed cherries from a jar on top? Because you know that one week they did "The Daily Show" live from Columbus in 2008 or so, and their summation was pretty much "Columbus: football and chain restaurants"? Dayton's Columbus without the football.

But what Dayton lacks in football, it makes up for in Southern Baptists!

And say what you will about chains, they know how to serve a good Southern Baptist!

Oh man, North Market is one of the reasons I'd sell an organ to move to Columbus.

I'm sure my area has a million not-chain awesome restaurants, but every time I ask for recommendations in the washingtondc LJ comm, I get chain recs. Even when I specifically say please no chain restaurants, I eat in them all the time and want something different. Apparently it's asking too much for members of a city comm to read the damn post.

I wish I could remember the name of the awesome Mexican joint I went to the one and only time I was in DC. I'll have to ask. It was amazing.

I love Mexican food, so do ask, I'm interested! (Wish I had someone to go with me, though! Nobody I know likes Mexican but me.)

I have to stop by Jenn's office tomorrow to pick something up anyway, I'll ask her. The margaritas were WONDERFUL. Yum. There's also VOLT but that's a) out in Frederick and b) a bit on the higher-end of the $$ scale. I have not eaten there yet, but I worship at the feet of Bryan Voltaggio and I have friends in Frederick so I'm scheming to make this happen.

One of my foodie friends spent four years there for college. I'm posting an open appeal to google buzz, and if she responds with anything good I'll let you know!

Er, any specific things you're hoping for? Thai, Nepalese, Mexican, pizza ... ?

Mexican or Tex-Mex is good, seafood, Italian, American comfort food... I'm more concerned about the seating, actually, I need armless padded chairs or a padded booth. Which is even harder to get recommendations about, since nobody remembers what the seating is like unless you actually have to. That's mainly why I stick to chains-- I know I can park for free and not have to walk a long way, I know what food is safe to eat, and I know that the seating won't leave me in screaming pain for hours afterward. I just wish I could branch out once in a while and try not-chain ones.

Alas, I don't know about the seating, but I have:

Marcel's (foggy bottom)
Old Glory (georgetown)
Cafe Atlantico (near chinatown; also, any other restaurant owned by Jose Andres)
Lauriol Plaza (near dupont circle; she recommended the margaritas especially)

This is just off to the top of her head. But hopefully some good leads!

American comfort food - you could try The Diner in Adams Morgan. I know I've sat in padded booths there.

My dad lives in the D.C. area and is sort of obsessed with eating out, so I asked him for his recommendations.

Sergio's in Silver Spring has awesome Italian food. Is there any particular area you're looking for -- in the city, a certain suburb?

Zaytinya - Mike Isabella of Top Chef is Head Chef and even though he was a dick on the show, it's AMAZING. Turkish/Lebanese tapas.

SO GOOD.

Can I trade places with her, too? She can live here, where there are no chain restaurants, but at least no one will get bitchy with her for complaining about it. And I will live in a place with decent restaurants yay!

Oh, but Dayton has that cute little block with - wait, that's technically in Kettering. You have the, um. The thing. With the stuff. Yeah...

Heh, if we're going to split that hair, then the suburb where I live has... um... Richmond! Because fuck it, it's five miles further to Indiana than to Dayton Mall, but it's a more pleasant place to visit.

But... we have baseball... (for varying definitions of baseball). And they say the Arcade may, possibly, if you look at it at the right angle and the right time, revive.

The Partner In Crime and I have fallen into a rut when it comes to our weekly lunch. I sorta wish we had a teleporter so we could go to all sorts of new places.

*sigh*

Yeah, I was finishing up my undergad at OSU at the time... it was crazytown, too. But at least there are a few nice local places in the short north in C-Bus...

... though Dayton's art museum is about ONE THOUSAND TIMES SUPERIOR than the Columbus museum. It was painful for an art history major, the C-Bus museum.
