Seattle's delicate tastebuds
Seattleite [info]killthief is disappointed in Seattle's lack of chain restaurants.

[info]seattle is disappointed in her lack of taste; her appalling lack of taste.

Many Seattleites remember when Starbucks wasn't The Man, but a feisty local upstart challenging The Man.

When Starbucks opened? Monorail Coffee, but even more than that, The Last Exit, of blessed memory, which died when its owner did.

Bitching about Starbucks is punk, anyway; there are... three, I think, independant coffee roasters in Olympia/Lacey/Tumwater, including one (Batdorf and Bronson's) big enough to have an extensive mail-order business; that one only got bigger when Starbuck's moved in across the road, and later moved into a 2,000sq ft space two doors down from 'Bucks. Every town around Puget Sound has local roasters competing with 'Bucks: Starbucks has the grocery store places, and guys like Olympic have the drive-through independants.

I just think it's funny that everyone thinks that Seattle, like, invented coffee, when San Francisco was the center of the West Coast coffee industry for ages.

Word. I lived in SF in the early 80s and came back with a taste for North Beach espresso joint coffee. Was quite a while before Seattle caught up with me. But once they did, they went to town on it and now I can hardly go anywhere without tripping over coffee shops - except my neighborhood. I live in the most coffee-deprived area of town, apparently.

So you only have two coffee shops in your neighborhood, as opposed to 12? :D

I, too, remember when Peet's was a fiery upstart challenging The Man.

And now it's The Man also.

Blue Bottle 4ever!

I don't drink coffee, but my parents love Blue Bottle.

I was actually thinking going all the way back to the turn of the previous century - Folger's and Hills Bros. operated out of SF and invented the vacuum packaging process for coffee (which was used to seal butter to be sent to troops overseas, as a major improvement over brine-packing). Up through the 80s they still roasted beans over in SOMA.

I think Blue Bottle is The Man now? They just opened a kiosk in my laundry room, so that's a pretty good sign.

LOL that's great. (I don't really care if a place becomes The Man so long as the quality doesn't go down, as too often happens when a chain expands and now has to keep product the same in hundreds or thousands of locations.)

But Peet's makes being The Man sooo delicious!
