A tiny, weeny WTF_Nature wank...
I was unsure whether to post this here or iwank, but I posted twice, once to LOL and once to say, "Dude, you're being really annoying", so I figure it might go better here. Right.

WTF_Nature is a super fun community on LJ devoted to the crazy shit nature comes up with. Freak storms. Animals we didn't know existed. Animals that do exist but mutate. If it's in nature, and it makes you go "WTF", it's in the comm.

Yesterday, writerspleasure decided to post about a species of goby in South African waters that has turned on its natural predator, the jellyfish, and made those squishy suckers into their dinner. A really interesting subject, full of fascinating ramifications for the local ecosystem in that area. For some reason, he brought in an Ayn Rand reference.

[info]markslj is tired of this political bullshit.

Wank is soon in the waters once the first blood is shed.

[info]pazi_ashfeather makes a comment on writerspleasure's behaviour.

Thing degenerate and get mighty personal after that, all while the both of them argue about Ayn Rand. I don't know why, but people arguing about Ayn Rand always makes me laugh.

So anyway, one minute you think it's over, but those crazy kids start up the argument again in another thread. Are the Bearded Gobys Libertarians or Bolsheviks? A question for the ages!

Ahhh... Ayn Rand. *chuckle* Tiny, to be sure, but like the Bearded Goby, kind of cute as well.

Gobys remind me of WoW.

Also, like so many things, I have heard of Ayn Rand more often in satire than I've actually heard *of* her.

To Wikipedia! *five wipe*

TvTropes has a good page on her and objectivism.

Hell, I've hit up TV Tropes while raiding before.

Of course, I play an Arcane mage, I could probably cook a three course meal while raiding.

I tried to read these, but went TL;DR and went to look up tropes on iCarly.

I'm a grown woman and I'd rather read about a show for tweens than grownup stuff. This explains so much.

I've never made it through the whole page, but it's the most... understandable one I've come across.

But then I just looked up GayOption to check and see if there's a new entry.

I'd say calling Ayn Rand and her philosophy "grownup" is being rather generous. It's more like reading the "enlightened" diatribes of a 14-year-old who has totes figured out the world better than anyone else.

Wow, Ayn Rand has some fans on tvtropes. And going by a spot-check on those two pages, it seems her fans there follow the usual Objectivist pattern of never having gotten past Philosophy 101.

Going by the Discussion on the second page, it's edited by a follower of her philosophy who erases any criticism.

...wait, so it's written by a fan and I still think the whole thing is shite? I wonder how it'd read if it had been written by a fervent anti-Rayndian.

I like the fact that both pages are objective about the subject. I know Objectivism and being objective are different, but still.

Aside from her being an Objectivist, my main knowledge of her is her unfortunate tendency to write "Welcomed" Rape.

I don't care if her books are somehow the most amazing thing since sliced bread, that alone prevents me from ever wanting to pick one up.

You know what's awkward? Hitting those scenes in the audiobook when you're in the car with your dad. Ugh. SCARRED FOR LIFE.

Also, her ideal man, on whom she based the hero of one of her (unfinished) novels, was a guy who tortured and killed a 12-year-old girl. (More here and here.) She said he had "a wonderful, free, light consciousness." She thought he had "a genuinely beautiful soul." She said that society as a whole was "loathsome" in their indignation at what he did, and that "It is repulsive to see all these beings with worse sins and crimes in their own lives, virtuously condemning a criminal."

I fucking hate Ayn Rand. And the more I read about her, the more I hate her.

"The first thing that impresses me about the case is the ferocious rage of a whole society against one man. No matter what the man did, there is always something loathsome in the 'virtuous' indignation and mass-hatred of the 'majority.'... It is repulsive to see all these beings with worse sins and crimes in their own lives, virtuously condemning a criminal..."

Because, really, who hasn't tortured and killed a junior high student? YOU'RE A MASSIVE COCKBITE, RAND!

Ugh! Here I just thought that aside from her squicky view of sex, she was probably a normal philosopher (albeit one I don't agree with). That's one of the most hideous things I ever read, and it blows my mind that anyone, much less a wellknown author with a cult following, would think there's anything admirable about that man.

Ewww. So essentially Rand's definition of a "real man" is synonymous with "clinical sociopath." Good to know.

(Somehow I just never got exposed to her as a kid, teen, young adult, etc., and I'm very very glad of it.)

What the fucking fuck.

Ayn Rand, pointless, vicious murder isn't the result of a stifling society, it's the result of the exact philosophy you espouse. Augh, I need to go bleach my brain now.

I was JUST about to comment about how grateful I was that SG&E was my first exposure to Rand, thus I felt insulated against ever falling for her crazy.

(I often mention the book to others, in conversations about Rand or Derrida, and they always look at me so very, very askance.)

Anyway, Matt Ruff=Awesome.
