Mensans v Non-Mensans
Jill, at Feministe, makes a blog post ridiculing a comment that uses Mensa membership to validate a fondness for the Cathy comic strip.

The first comment starts off with a defense of Mensa and an earnest explanation of what it means to be a genius. But soon comments erupt criticizing all standard tests, defending standardized tests and Mensa, along with accusations of ableism, lamenting the loneliness and social ostracization that is the lot of smart people and horror at Jill's very appalling anti-intellectualism.

SweetMachine nicely rounds up the kerfuffle: Way to fight the good fight, Mensa lovers! Put that genius to work!

MENSAns and non-MENSAns alike, can we not see the one thing that unites us ALL:

an inability to stay out of internet slapfights.

Also, why has no one told me about the "I'm smart, so anything I like is quality" defense before? 'Cause I think now is the time to talk about the deep, intellectual meaning of Ninja Warrior.

We could start a symposium! I can do something with Buckaroo Banzai ("Schroedinger's Theory Applied to Film: If You Don't Know Why The Watermelon Is There, Was It Ever There After All?")

... I realize that Ninja Warrior is something different, but when I read that my brain immediately went to Ninja Assassin and I was all "... mmmm, Rain."

Yours was better, my brain instead went to American Ninja, and Michael Dudikoff? He is no Rain.

If it makes you feel better now that I look at that photo more closely, I think he's standing in my grandmother's kitchen.

That is awesome! Holy shit. Why did I not know about this before? I could watch people do that all day.

I am reluctantly proud to admit that I have done that (the watching it all day: not the obstacle course - I would probably flail on my ass ridiculously quickly).

I heard that the course designers' goals were to make the course so that only one or two people AT MOST could get through the first level. IF more did, they were all 'damn, we have to make it harder next time'

That needs to be an Olympic event. It can replace the "modern" pentathlon.

Olympic gymnasts have competed; they usually don't do particularly well. (Though either Paul or Morgan Hamm did fairly well in Sasuke 17-- the same competition I linked.)

I linked one of only three people to ever complete a full course.

I, for one, am grievously offended that Hallmark channel movies never even get nominated.

I, meanwhile, would like to discuss video games about magical mech pilot actresses and how they represent the challenges facing modern Japanese women and the tension between the traditional you know what never mind I can't do this with a straight face.
