Your Button Is Bad and You Should Feel Bad
AdBlock for Chrome updated recently. Among other changes, there is now an AdBlock button that sits in the extension bar and can't be disabled. This is the button that ends the universe.

The extension's author blames the inability to disable the button on Chrome's developers, links to a bug report and encourages users to upvote it, and posts instructions for hiding the button. Alas, the instructions just shorten the extension button space and cause expansion arrows to appear, which people hate almost as much as they hate the button. Most commenters also have great difficulty understanding the instructions in the first place.

Cue 300+ comments of seething button-rage.

I can't link to individual comments, but highlights include the straightforward:

Noooo! I don't want button!!!

The aesthetically affronted:

This is a useful extension, but I've had to disable it because the large, bright red button destroys the look of my toolbar.

It was functioning fine for months without a giant red stop sign smacking me in the periphery of my vision.

The scatological:

crap button ,,ur brain is full of semen??

Asking to drag a button to the right to hide it is like saying if you don't like a pile of poo in the middle of your room just put a rug over it.

The baffling:

Thanks but your acting like google on youtube

And occasionally the defensive:

Adblock can put a button on my bloody forehead if it wants to, it's that important.

For reference, the button itself looks like this. There's also some bonus wanking about AdBlock now requiring access to your browsing history.

I like it better than the one in Firefox, tbh.... and yeah, I can't understand why they're wanking...

My thoughts exactly! My eye was just wandering over to the big red ABP sitting in my toolbar...

Now that I don't actually mind so much, go fig. But I don't want anything up top except what I decide is needed.
(Which is why I find myself unchecking lots of boxes in the middle of software installs/upgrades: "Yes, I also want to install SpiffyBar, which will make my life Better, more fulfilling and more Spiffy!" No, no I do not. Go away.)

Yeah. I did that recently for something, I think it was a new version of AGV and it insisted on the damn bar, and I kept having to turn it off, because it kept turning itself back on periodically, like "did you really truly mean to disable this helpful Yahoo!-linked toolbar? really honestly truly?!?!"

I hate having bunch of stuff on the top of the window, because my screen space is limited with this laptop. It's a widescreen, full-size laptop, but the screen is still way tiny compared to some of the monitors you can get these days. It drives me batty that I can't put the navigation bar on the same row as the menu bar. There's plenty of room for the forward/back/refresh/stop arrows, address bar, and google search bar up there, why won't it go?! :(

I'm even willing to shunt those things down to the status bar if they'd go, since there's a bunch of unused space, but I can't turn it off because that's where Ghostery and Colorpicker and Download Manager and Greasemonkey and Rikaichan and Stylish and Screengrab and Scrapbook and GoogleReader live.

They will. Right click, "Customize", drag and drop. At least, in Firefox.

I've frigging tried that and it doesn't work. Or else I wouldn't be complaining. And I know I've seen other peoples' browsers with it, too.

The trick is right-clicking on the toolbar, not the button. Try all the way to the right on your toolbar.

I take it back. Holy shit, I tried it again, just to make sure, and whatever I was doing before, it worked this time. And I was just trying two days ago, too. -.-

Gah, I hate these boxes. No, I do not want your toolbar, your search engine, your whatever! GO AWAY!

What really drives me up the wall though is the software which picks a language for you and then doesn't let you change it. IF I WANT THE TRANSLATED VERSION I'LL TELL YOU! RAAAAAAAAAGE!

Don't use the "Recommended" settings when installing anything because a lot of software will try to sneak in their useless toolbars.

CONSTANT VIGILANCE.

IKR? The Chrome one looks... positively enchanting in comparison to the one on Firefox:

I mean, look at that. That's ugly as hell.

Incidentally, will NoScript ever see the day in Chrome?

This is what I get for switching between Firefox and Chrome all the time, seriously. -.-;
