AnNaNoWaRe (Annual NaNo Wank Report)
It's been a relatively quiet month. Alan Holman has made his triumphant and frequently suppressed return as the user TrutherWriter, whose novel synopsis includes such gems as:

Tim is real, but Israel is a CIA/MOSSAD creation. Black helecoptors, paranoid dreams ... 9/11 was an inside job -- you know it, you feel it, you pump your fist, you're a champion of the truth! Vaccines cause autism whether Tim's teacher thinks different. Why the hell do the girls that chase Tim so violently get a couch in their bathrooms while non-violent Tim gets a not-chocolate surprise that takes some time to wash out the stink!

His regular posts don't make much more sense either, but sadly I cannot link to any of them as they've all been suppressed for being abusive towards others or using profanity.

But I know what you really want, OTFers; news on the infamous marienbadmylove. What's this? you ask. Surely he was banned last year for plagiarism? Well, apparently being banned twice didn't stop Alan Holman, and being banned a mere once hasn't stopped Mark Leach, whose surname is (almost) quite apropos. Thus far his one and only post is in the Extreme Accomplishments Shoutout thread, as follows:

Success! I just crossed the 500,000-word mark with “A Canadian Marienbad,” my Nano entry and literary tribute to the people of Canada. I created the manuscript over a couple of hours by using a do-it-yourself novel kit I read about in the letters section of the infamous Laura Miller story on Salon.com. Starting with the basic 50,000-word template, I repeatedly pressed the copy and paste button in order to push the manuscript past one million words. Then I used my computer’s find and replace editing functions to customize the text with Canadian concepts and themes, turning it into my own story. By the end of the month I expect to expand my manuscript to five million words. Shouldn’t be too hard. After all, it’s just a matter of repeatedly pressing CTRL-V, then adding in my own ideas. But I will need to be careful not to strain my index finger!

Well, at least we assume it's the same author. He's posting under the name bccomox, also on LiveJournal, and so far this is his only post. Time will tell if there is more wank yet to be mined from this source.

The prize for NaNoWanker of the Year, however, undoubtedly goes to Laura Miller, whose article on Salon.com, Better yet, DON'T write that novel drew the ire of a multitude of NaNo participants, who didn't appreciate being told their work was a waste of time, nor the implication that because they were writers, not readers, they were doing the publishing world a disservice. Word of advice to Ms. Miller: writers fairly often also happen to be readers. They also happen to be capable of reading your ill-informed article and taking umbrage.

It just makes this wanka wonder where Miller thinks professional writers come from. Here's a hint: they do not spring fully formed from the forehead of some fantastic literary deity. They start out small and end up big. And for some of them, that start is NaNoWriMo.

You got some coding errors.

Re: Miller. Lady, if nanowriters are taking away your glory, there's probably not much to begin with.

"It was yet another depressing sign that the cultural spaces once dedicated to the selfless art of reading are being taken over by the narcissistic commerce of writing."

Points for originality, at least: I've never heard that one before.

...I have to admit, though, the Salon piece sounds like someone's struggling to meet her monthly quota. It's not enraged and frothy enough. Tsk tsk, Laura Miller. Wank harder.

Jack Torrance, is that you?

Miller has convinced me to seriously do NaNo next year. She doesn't understand that there a lot of people who do research and prep work prior to starting NaNo and it's a good way for people to start writing a work or start writing all together. It's not for making something perfectly polished, but for making a first draft. At least that's always how I've viewed it.

Where, exactly, does Miller think new writers come from?

And writers typically are readers, plus Nano raises money for libraries, which encourages more reading.

The robowriters amuse me, what is the point of letting a computer write for you?

So...if all the books anyone could ever want to read are already written, can Laura Miller please rec me a book that:

-stars a heroine and her band of nakama
-has heroes who aren't straight, cisgendered, and/or white
-has lots of machiavellian politics involving multiple cultures, all of which are presented as equal
-has parasites and interesting biological stuff
-is ideally set in a steampunk universe
-involves many moments of sheer win and awesome by various characters.

I'm sure she can name several! Since, after all, everything important's been already written and that includes all my narrative kinks, right?

... is that supposed to be a desirable thing? Why does anyone need a couch in their bathroom? I mean, do people seriously go "man, I wish I can chill in my bathroom and watch TV, but I don't have a couch because I'm so non-violent!"?

Also, I notice Laura Miller has written a book. Tsk tsk. Rather than wasting that time on the self-absorbed and narcissistic pastime of writing, she should have devoted it to expanding her horizons and learning new things by reading.

Re: Miller: SOMEBODY is jellus! \o/ My fanfic beta loves that I'm doing NaNo because she loves reading my work, and she doesn't care if it's fanfic or original fic because she's just a fan of my writing (as well as being an awesome friend). That's all the motivation I need, so Miller can kiss off. I'd like to see this Miller person tell Sara Gruen that NaNo is a waste of time!

So, how's everyone doing in NaNo anyway? I'm actually ahead of schedule! I should be hitting 30,000 words here in the next day or so!

Well, I prefer being pro-active. I tried to designate December as "National Revise the Shit Out of NaNo Month." Then January as "No, Really, Spell-check Doesn't Count as Actual Revision No Matter How Many Times You Do It Month." February seemed like a good month to designate "Fuck It, It's Cold And I Need Kindling Month." So when "National 'Gay Lust Goblins of Pigmoles' Burned My House Down And Now I Need a Hit Novel to Help Pay For A New One Month" rolls around in March, I'll be properly motivated to write something that'll make Ms. Laura Miller eat crow.

But, of course, she'd rather just bitch about people enjoying themselves.

By the way, is there a nanowrimo type thing for artists who want to art more often, but get lazy or stuck without prompts/deadlines? I feel like there must be...

But as much as I enjoy imagining stories, I learned several years ago that I am not a writer, and am actually more suited to being an editor or beta. But I can art pretty good, I think. Having recognized this, I don't feel guilty about having absolutely no interest in nanowrimo (I used to feel guilty about it, because of all my friends participating, but whatevs)

You know, the more I stare at the first summary, the more I wonder if a sane writer* could probably turn that into some kind of off-beat humor thing when little Timmy gets kidnapped by space pirates or moon ninja or something, and we have the story of Mister Persecuted Conspiracy Nut somehow in a real live conspiracy.

Did I mention most of my inspiration for writing comes from reading fanficrants and thinking 'I could make that good'?

* Meaning someone who isn't going to write little Timmy there as somehow being the only right-thinking person in a world of sheeple.

YESS I was waiting for the annual NaNo wank! And it's my favorite, the "stop having fun" kind!

It was yet another depressing sign that the cultural spaces once dedicated to the selfless art of reading are being taken over by the narcissistic commerce of writing.

This is such a beautifully nonsensical sentence. Where does she think the novels she reads come from? Is she not aware that people have to write them first? The mind boggles.

Yet while there's no shortage of good novels out there, there is a shortage of readers for these books.

Oh, damn. I thought I could be both a reader and a writer. No one told me I had to pick just one!

Did anyone else notice how this year the Yuletide wank came BEFORE the NaNoWriMo wank?

Curiouser and curiouser.

Or possibly the actual mechanics of writing a novel are Deep Magic that should not be shown to the unitiated. An author should lock themselves in and emerge six months later with a finished novel and a rousing tale of how The Muse dictated it to them in their sleep. Otherwise we risk exposing the fact that authors are human beings and have good and bad days like everyone else.

...10 books in 10 months is an accomplishment?! Hell, before college, I used to read that much in a week. I still probably could manage 10 books every two weeks without a problem.

IfeelikehavingabookadaychallengeformyNewYear'sResolutionnow.

She's setting her standards way too low for readers and writers both.

If you want to freshen your carpets, cleaners in Sydney advise to make your own, home-made carpet freshener. This is an effective and cheaper way to take the bad odours out of your carpets and rugs.
