Favorite actual-80s moment: I'm in the basement, which was where our tv that had cable was located, watching MTV. "Dancing With Myself" comes on, and happens to be playing while my Mom passes through in relation to laundry or something. She pauses and watches for a second. "No wonder he's dancing with himself -- who would want to dance WITH him?"

(Privately, I sort of had to agree; I was not a big Billy Idol fan. But this was extra wonderful because my Mom was older than most, she'd been in junior high during WWII, so it was even more "you kids..." than it might have been, given the 60s/70s had truly passed her by.)

(I've heard that "Turning Japanese" rumor as well, particularly that it was "prison slang". I raise a skeptical eyebrow.)
