From what I remember, she wrote an Alternate History/Fantasy in which there weren't any Native Americans. So either she said "Hey, let's use America as the landmass where I can set my book about prehistoric/mythical creatures" or "I think I'll commit literary genocide against them Injuns, ho, ho, ho," or something in between.

It's all very YMMV.
