It really does seem to have gotten worse. When I was a kid, I remember stuff like science kits having a girl and a boy on the cover pretty much all the time. Plus even the "girl toys" had astronauts and doctors along with the fairies and princesses. And She-ra!

Misogyny and the related policing of gender identity seem to have gotten very much worse since the 80s and have definitely gotten worse since the 90s. Like when some dumbass TV psychologist said (I think last year) that Hilary Clinton wearing slacks shows she's uncomfortable with being a woman, and people did anything other than laugh him off the air.
