When I was waitressing at a diner in New Jersey, I was getting officially paid $2.25/hr (which comes out to about 1,75 €). The way that particular owner got around the minimum wage law (which I believe had just been raised to $7.25/hr at the time), was that we were required report receiving at least minimum wage in tips at the end of every shift. Which wasn't so bad on busier nights, especially if you got a lot of tips paid by credit card since you had to report all of them regardless. But there were plenty of really slow nights (especially when I was first starting out) when I went home without making that ~$50 in tips, but would have to report that I did anyway. TL;DR the food service industry in the US and especially the way it pays their wait staff sucks. Post a comment in response: |
