I was so astonished that I forgot a post title
BEHOLD: A fantastically terrible tale of plagiarism that involves a mysterious man who gave the plagiarist and her writing group a manuscript, then "died" in a "car" "accident"; a "niece" of some random lady who threatens "a campaign on the sidewalks letting Seagull Book patrons know how you handle problems," before being repudiated as totally imaginary by her supposed aunt; a completely different alleged "niece" of the original author who simultaneously claims she has "verbal permission" to reuse the novel for her own book; the assumed threat of excommunication from the Mormon Church; and, I am 99% sure, at least two sockpuppets. Possibly three.

Wow.

That is...that is...WOW. I cannot even brain this, that's how out there it is.

Also, it's really pretty hard to get excommunicated. You gotta work at that shit.

You can tell all those characters are sockpuppets because they all spell "plagiarism" the same way (correctly).

I'm not done reading it yet, but I think my favorite part so far is the bit about how some guy in her writing group supposedly gave her a copy of the original, told her he'd collaborated on it, asked her to improve it, and then died in a tragic car accident. HOW COULD SHE HAVE BEEN SO 'DOOPED'?

I thought the best bit was when she switched from that to claiming to be the author's niece, who gave her the idea in the first place and had permission to reuse her work. Did you really think anyone was gonna buy that for a second, kid, matter how many times you say "Shhhh, it's a secret because SEX."

It's all sockpuppets on the plagiarism side of it, sockpuppets all the way down.

Not to be uncharitable, but I am assuming that basically anyone the least bit positive or supportive towards the plagiarist (often TOTALLY OUT OF NOWHERE) is a big ol' sock.

She needs a plucky girl detective to pull all those threads together and find out who her 'niece' is.

(I especially love how that email was clearly never meant to make its way to the author herself, because funny how incredibly easily that lie was to disprove)

Maybe she plagiarized her excuses from the greatest hits of f_w.

That would be amazing.

One of her socks has now started trying to defame a reviewer who offered Nunes a copy of the book to provide to her lawyer, claiming she'll pirate out advance copies given to her.

Good Lord.

A friend of mine pointed out that, according to someone in the Nunes post comments, Mullens has a street team and a tour planned (that may or may not be canceled?). As much as she keeps saying she won't publish the book and that she's just a "hobby writer," it really sounds like she has every incentive to shout people down and push forward as best she can.

Hm, the most intriguing question has not been asked yet: Who wrote her other books? I can't imagine anyone who had to resort to this sort of thing was able to write her own books in the past.

My goodness but that is a lot of socks. I like the part where the original author points out that none of her siblings had children when she wrote the book, meaning her "niece" would have had to have given her the idea pre-conception.
