I was inspired by the recent UCLA post to introduce to you my very own Southern California college wank, this time at Pomona College.

Recently, a semi-frat called OAD (don't know what it stands for) gave out a list of things inductees had to do. One of them was "Take a picture of yourself with 10 Asians." The Asian American community on campus went nuts, saying they were being treated like zoo animals. [info]tonytiu then took it upon himself to write an excellent article on the event for the student newspaper, The Student Life (henceforth referred to as TSL). Soon after its publication on the TSL website, nasty racist comments started appearing in response to the article.

Horrible yes? That was my initial reaction as well. Until [info]pomona_college suddenly turned into [info]tonytiu's personal support group.

[info]tonytiu posts a link to his TSL article. In the comments at the bottom are a lot of awful, racist comments that have been left (since deleted, but preserved here). A massive attempt to out-PC fellow Sagehens in response ensues (which is pretty entertaining in and of itself).

[info]raptorinblack is driven to post an apology for saying (rather harshly) that people are overreacting to the whole thing.

I add a comment to Tony's original post that is a rebuttal of [info]midas888's response to [info]raptorinblack. Tony forever

I add a comment to Tony's original post that is a rebuttal of <lj user="midas888">'s response to <lj user="raptorinblack">. Tony forever <a href="<a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/pomona_college/99805.html?thread=642269#t642269">endears himself</a> to me by responding that "a good many of us [community members]" have secretly decided that this topic is closed, and I shouldn't have commented.

Tony posts an <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/pomona_college/100628.html">update</a> revealing that a friend of an OAD member had leaked the existence of Tony's story to a <a href="http://www.hipinion.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17301">public messageboard</a>, members of which then left the nasty racist comments on the TSL website. First instance of Tony saying he's "so upset" by all of this.

<b>02.23</b>
Tony encourages people to attend <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/pomona_college/100928.html">a number of campus events</a> geared towards discussion of racist or intollerant comments. First instance of Tony asking all of us to "stand by" him during this difficult time.

Tony posts <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/pomona_college/101212.html">again</a>, this time with a long ramble about how the folks on the message board are targetting him. First mention of him being unimaginably scared of kids on the internet. Because they've found his public website, which is just www.tonytiu.com and is probably listed on Google.

Tony posts <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/pomona_college/101667.html">yet again</a> about how he can't sleep because he's so scared. First mention (by Tony) that maybe if he stoped making a big deal out of it, they'd leave him alone.

Guess who? Yes, it's <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/pomona_college/102030.html#comments">Tony again</a>, telling everyone that he finally got some sleep, thanking us for our "support", and asking us to come to one of the college forums he metioned earlier.

<b>02.25</b>
Tony talks <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/pomona_college/102432.html">some more</a> about the Pain Inside, and that his fans should not be offended if he hasn't gotten around to replying to them yet - he just has so many emails, you see. I start to lose my patience with <strike>Teh Drama</strike> ego-stroking of it all.

<lj user="protension"> also <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/pomona_college/102722.html">loses his cool</a> and demands to know why OAD is getting so much shit for what was intended to be a joke. S/he thinks it's the racist comments left on Tony's article that are the worst bit, not the initial frat business.

<b>02.26</b>
Not content with having multiple campus-wide forums held about himself, or with being published in TSL once concerning the OAD thing and a second time about racism awareness, Tony decides to post his entire <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/community/pomona_college/103568.html">second letter to TSL</a> in the online community as well! Just in case people missed it or something. (Wouldn't want to miss out on any ego-boosting emails from his fan club.)
</lj-cut>

There's wank all around on this one:

<b>See!</b> idiotic 13-y-olds who post racist things online for fun (be sure to check out their <a href="http://www.hipinion.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17301">forum</a> for some primo stuff).

<b>Watch!</b> as all the Pomona folks attempt to be more PC and sensitive than the last person, even though they're probably all white.

<b>Be annoyed!</b> at the OP, for making such a big deal about all of it.

the "endears himself" link doesn't work.

And eh...coming from someone who had to live through racism from students and teachers alike since primary school, I can relate to the OP. His reactions are completely natural. I'd do the same thing if I was him, honestly.

Maybe he's just posting repeatedly on the LJ because he's looking for support and needs reassurance that he's not under threat by everyone? When you keep getting racist attacks over and over, you start thinking a lot about when your next attack will be. It's no longer safe. Paranoia, yes, but what can you do?

:\

I concur. Even if those comments were a joke, what kind of assholes think that shit is funny?

Ah, California. How I don't miss thy volatile race relations.

Please remember that racism exists for all races, and using the stereotype of the "White student" who does not care is just as harmful a comment as those posted on this site a few days ago.

Oh, blah blah blah whiteman'sburdencakes. When white students start feeling physically threatened because of their race, then I'll worry about whether or not it's okay to paint ourselves with the same brush.

I'm ashamed to say that there is anti-Caucasian sentiments sometimes expressed here. (I'm somewhere in Asia). So the "White Man" does experience racism...

Yeah, I can see that. The white man hasn't exactly endeared himself to most of Asia. I've only been to Taiwan and Hong Kong, so I wouldn't say I've really "seen" Asia, but the worst thing I remember happening was my not knowing how to bargain with vendors - never got picked on for being white. Every race is capable of racism, though.

At least in CA, they admit that race relations are an issue. Here in the Northeast, some people seem genuinely surprised that not everyone in the world is white.

Where in the Northeast are you? I'm in Boston, the home of people throwing rocks at bussed black students. (Sigh.) Fortunately, with more and more immigrants (and their food - mmmmm) coming to the area, people are gradually getting used to the idea that people come in more than one color.
