Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood:Mildly Amused

Freaking out over bad reviews and bad spelling is apparently universal...
This one was slipped under my virtual door by one of the many lovely Jens I hang out with. Thank you, oneoftheJens!

PublishAmerica.com is a site where people pay to get their unsellable crap masterpieces made into books so they can beg their friends and relatives to buy copies. It seems like a generally friendly place, but it's inevitable that a drama queen would arise...

Meet Diana Hignutt. Diana is apparently one of the site's BNWs (Big Name Writers), and she thinks very highly of her own work. So highly, in fact, that a mild negative review sends her into a highstrung little tizzy of stamping feet and tossing mane. Don't miss the bit about four messages down where she decides that she's being persecuted for being a post-op transsexual. *patpat* There there, honey. There there.

That one's fairly short and a lot of the responders tell her to chill, so you might just want to keep an eye out for the slobbering sycophants and the wah-wah-me-toos. Consider it a zesty entree. Now! Ready for the dry, grey, gristly main course? Take a look at this one. It's a 190+ message thread about SPELLING MISTAKES. IMHO, this one's beautifully wanky for the sheer grinding never-ending SHUT UP ALREADY factor. I certainly could not get through it all. Ouch...

I didn't check out the second thread because I'm not feeling all that masochistic at the moment, but the first one was lovely.

I liked this quote the best:

I thought reading was for pleasure anyway. Don't you just hate or dislike those who take it upon themselves to be your critic.

Oh, yes. That's why constructive criticism and critical thinking are bad things! That's why everyone should keep quiet about the flaws of what they read and skip through the flowers hand in hand with the author singing buzzy little songs about bees and bluebirds and bluebells and buttercups! Because a few hurt feelings are too high a price to pay for honesty and evaluation as close to objective as the critic can manage!

And flashing the "they hate me because I'm [x]" card? Done to death and left for the flies. Find a new excuse as to why they didn't like your work. Everyone's far too wound up in identity politics anyway.

I have to admit I did a double-take on learning the author was post-op and that her name was Diana. I thought for a second, "Pseudonym of Jennifer Diane Reitz?"

But, no, I don't think so. This one's whiny about her identity rather than her life.

>>I have to admit I did a double-take on learning the author was post-op and that her name was Diana. I thought for a second, "Pseudonym of Jennifer Diane Reitz?">>

Indeed. I was under the impression that going under the knife was supposed to make you more well-adjusted and in tune with yourself, not unbalanced and paranoid. And yes, that may have been one of the most insensitive and assholish things I've ever said, but, y'know. Dot, dot, line.

Hmm. On the first wank - I have this feeling I might get wanky myself.

The trans community can be really harsh. I left almost all of the FtM lj comms I belonged to months ago, because I absolutely could not stand it anymore. The bitchfights, the backstabbing, the month-long feuds...it's ridiculous. The binary-identified insist they're left out, that the non-binary think they're too "old school" for the current tg movement. The non-binary are suspicious that the binary folks feel that they're "posers" and not "trans enough." You can't say two words without offending someone because their identity is being "invalidated." It seems like everyone is feeling alienated at the same time as everyone pretends we're "brothers." Puke.

So that said...more could be going on here than is readily apparent. Meaning, she's probably not the only one being a whiny little bitch. Somewhere out there, someone else is bitching endlessly about her, and not just her writing talent (or lack thereof.) Oh yes, and there ARE tg people who do not like her because she's post-op (non-op people can be strangely elitist), but they undoubtedly have nothing to do with this at all.

I'm not bitter.

Jesus Christ, word on the t*community thing.

I've reached the point where I'm tempted to invest in a pin that says something like "Just because you're gender divergant, it doesn't mean you're my friend." Shorter and snappier, though.

And I usually stay away from communities as a whole...bleh.

To whom are we forking? I ain't spent a dime spreading my lies and deceit across America, personally. Not that any of it's left digital media yet.

Good this this website set ME straight!

No one's trying to "set you straight", dear. Personally, I merely find your heartbreaking tale of betrayal deeply moving.

(Uh oh! Now YOU'VE been wanked!)

I think you missed the point. One wanks oneself. Others may provide ample opportunity and guidance, but that's really not the same thing. If you're going by our own strange and esoteric usage, then you'd need to have posted our imbecilic and childish yet oddly mesmerizing behavior to a local community dedicated to people who are amused by such things. Or I suppose you could just provide a small mound of porn and some Vaseline. Whatever floats our boat, so to speak.

Tune in next week when this thread hits 210!

Alas, you're sadly mistaken. That's [info]fandom_wank. This is [info]otf_wank. That means that many of us are merely smiling benignly at you rather than coming up with elaborate puns, more's the pity. Next time, try whining about Krycek or Spike. That'll get you results.

My apologies, I didn't realize I was dealing with a kindergarten class. I'll use simpler language this time.

In order to pay for a service money must pass from the buyer's hands to the seller's, at least that's what *I've* always been taught. Since that doesn't happen at PA in terms of author to publisher, I made light of your false opening statement.

Does that help to simplify things or should I use pie examples? (There are two pies, one is apple...)

You guys crack me up. Yeah, I'll post this on PA AND my website because you ARE that important.

Thanks for the smiles!

James, sweety, lets try it this way:

Your 'publisher' says they publish 1,100 books a year. Virgin Books, one of the biggest British Publishers, including the Black Lace and Nexus Imprints, publish 200 books a year total. That includes nonfiction, fiction, and those ghastly ghostwritten celebrity novels. You don't find anything strange about that? You don't think that says something about the quality control, or lack thereof, of PA?

www.poetry.com runs a scam on similar lines. You pay nothing upfront. They make all their money out of selling copies of their publications to authors and their families afterwards.

And seeing as you were so nice to provide us with your webpage, I took the liberty of checking it out.

Nice prologue (http://www.angelfire.com/scifi2/writerguy/Prologue.htm) you have there, James.

I think the last line speaks for itself:

“Accurse you all!” he whispered.

Jimmy--

Have you ever compared the terms that PA gives you to the terms that you might get from a real publisher? I have the sneaking suspicion you'll find that the real publisher's percentage will be a bit more generous than the one you get from PA--which means that yeah, you're paying for it one way or another. It's exactly like CafePress; no, you don't lay out any money, but you make far less money than you would if you got off your lazy ass and made merchandising for reals.

Also, you're a retard.

Banny

You all may want to be careful quoting my book. It is copyrighted and should you overdue it I can (legally) get this thread pulled. Since I'm having such a great time I'd hate to see that happen.

As for your distaste of PA I've been through all the misconceptions before. Do you want the link?
I mean seriously, PA makes money selling books. So do ALL publishers. Sheesh, people.

As for my punctuation, be careful what you criticize. Those of us who know better will see you for the fraud you are. But I can see why a high school grad would get confused, I am, after all, university educated. Would you prefer I spoke using shadow puppets to help you understand?

What I noticed is that you read the prologue to its end. Excellent! That is all the glory I need (boring, uncreative crap you stop reading after the first couple of paragraphs).
Make sure you buy a book when it's ready. (You didn't comment on the cover!)

As for cafe.press, you can change "lazy" to "too busy". (notice the period outside the quotation marks. I'm not quoting myself or using a title, in which case it would be "too busy.")

Class dismissed!

Thanks for the free advertising!
I really don't have time for you lovely bunch of people, but feel free to pop onto my site and send me an email!
Sorry your pathetic wank didn't hold any weight.

You may want to be careful with being exceptionally retarded making empty legal threats. Fair use, fucko.

And I think I'll keep the "lazy", thanks. Cafepress is for chumps, as is your little "We're really not a vanity publisher, really!" vanity publisher there. Those who can, do; those who can't are easy prey for Internet scams that tell them they can.

Lastly, the people around here have become inured to the worst crap that the Intarwub can offer. The fact that they managed to slog through your frankly dumbtacular introduction is proof that they can read anything to give it a fair shot, rather than praise aimed at your cock ego. For a fella with a degree, you sure seem to use a lot of tired sentence fragments in your magnum opus OF SUCK.

So, in summation, you're still an idiot and a shitty writer. Enjoy your publicity; do tell us how many more books this sells for you, won't you? If it's a substantial amount, I think you owe us a cut of your teeny tiny cut.

Overdo, James. A university educated person such as yourself should know how to avoid homonyms. And a published author should know that a single sentence or even a paragraph is fair use for review purposes, even if said review is to tell you that you do, indeed, suck.

And given that I'm a speed reader with a Masters Degree (about to embark on my PhD, actually), it didn't take me that long to read your wee prologue. You want to play mine-is-bigger, I'll be here till the end of the week. Then I have to buzz off to a conference up north. You know how it is.

Granted we have to share the message with another group, but don't you feel honoured that a published author has decided to take precious time to write to us? I actually, Goddess forgive me, went to Diana Hignutt's site that she advertised in her .sig line... www.authorsden.com/dianahignutt

I downloaded the free sample of the novel.

It was so bad that it crashed my browser when I read the first four paragraphs. Either that or during the convulsive fit of seeing such bad content, I must have hit my back button so many times I simply overloaded the processor.

I tend to go with the first idea though because I was still able to convulse out "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" and THAT worked.
