Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
the anti-random-friending people strike again
This time, someone starts a petition to force LJ to stop letting people friend whoever they please.

From the petition: "How is this possible when LiveJournal.com in no way keeps you protected from unwanted journal readers?"
Well, for a start, it's called 'using filters,' but that would be much too complicated for the sort of people who would sign this thing.

The organizer would also like supporters to put up a code on their journals.

This has the potential to be just as annoying as the colorbar meme.

honestly, i don't understand this whole kafuffle at all. can't you boot someone from your friendslist if you don't want them there? and really, what's the big deal with having some random person reading your entries? i'm sure there's nothing in them that the cia/kgb/bbq could use against you, never mind someone you don't even know.

yes, there are the trolling communities that add people at random, some of which are rather offensive. but anyone who knows you will surely accept a quick "whoa, i have nothing to do with that" and the issue will be settled.

serenity now, people. serenity now!

Not from your friends-of list, which is what this whole wank is about. LiveJournal for the longest time had made it POLICY that no one should be able to tinker with another's friends list, but now it looks as though some sort of banning capability will be implemented, although I doubt it will be what the wankers want.

This is one wank where I will never understand the other side of the argument. It's the Internet, anyone can read it, regardless of friends list, unless you lock it, which is entirely within your right to do. The end. So quit yer bitching.

I don't get it. Your friendslist only list people who you have added as a friend, not the people who have friended you. So the only way people would know who has friended you would be to look at your profile. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what you're really interested in and what you're not.

Why this upsets people
[info]khym_chanur
2004-03-04 04:27 am UTC (link)
Say a troll creates an account named "anti_arab", then friends john_doe. If somone who knows nothing about LJ looks at john_doe's userinfo page as sees "friend of: anti_arab", or looks at anti_arab's userinfo page and sees "friends: john_doe", said person might think "If john_doe is a friend of anti_arab, then anti_arab must be john_doe's friend, since friendship is commutative! And if john_doe is friends with anti_arab, he must be racist too!!"

The LJ coders are currently in the process of separating the friends list into "people I read" and "people I trust to read my protected entries", so they'll probably change the "friends" temrinology to something else. If it still bothers people if random users show up on their "people who read my journal" list, then I'll be completely boggled.

(Reply to this)(Thread)

"friends of" list is optional!
[info]meril
2004-03-04 04:38 am UTC (link)
Yeah, but right now, you have the option to hide your "friends of" list. All users can do this. Nobody has to see who's friended you.

I've had mine hidden since I signed up for LJ, because I thought it would help protect the privacy of people who choose to read my journal, to an extent.

Oh boy, I forsee much wankage when lj get round to breaking down the "friends" categories!!

I dunno about anybody else, but when I got added by a random friender, I left my "friends of" list up there so people could see I hadn't friended the troll back!

This petition is not in any way an "attack" on LiveJournal.
In fact, I believe it is truly the best-run and designed website online.

What a bunch of cockspanks. Shit, adding someone to your friends list is no different to bookmarking a webpage. There are so many ways to deal with it without getting all sandy vagina'd...ah, but you know all that anyway.

Gads, this is one of the most annoying memes ever. >_< If you really despise someone so much, then you can put in your userinfo an explanation about it.

Oh no! What if a troll put up a webpage saying that s/he likes me! That I am on the list of favorite people! What would I do! I would die!

Also, doesn't this feature they're proposing have the potential for SO MUCH wank? Let's say Meril friends me and I secretly hate her. Then I make a gigantic public show of rejecting Meril! Whee!!! Of course this causes even more LJ-drama. I would think the LJ abuse staff just wouldn't want to deal with it, especially if Meril sics her friends on me.

That said: this has been proposed time and time again. Why can't people just hide their friends lists? I have seen no good reasons why they cannot. If they really want to display or promote a community, they can put it in their userinfo. This whole thing makes me want to put in a suggestion about removing friends-of from the userinfo. :P

Hell, if that one troll I encountered was any indication, they'd just pretend there was drama even if there wasn't. (I know, that was confusing. IdiotGirl, in that rollick thread, had several drama-related delusions about me)
