LIEK ANARKY 4 EVAH!!1!
A couple of friends and I decided to start an Anarchy Cell in our School and neighborhood. This group's main objective was to create a rebelion against our school, which is run like germany in the 1930-40's.

With an opening statement like that, you know it's only going to go downhill

Skeletor himself is a defender of Anarchy, but was thwarted by a bunch of posers. He decides to ask the guys at the CKYforums what he should do. Wank (and stupidity) ensue.

Whee, he made a terroristic threat (illegal activity), and violated two of our laws (Godwin's and quite possibly Snacky's) at the same time! Three strikes and yer out, buddy. ^__^

Not much snark (other than "omfg u dumass" over and over) to be had in the first page of replies, but the shit starts flinging (with references to 9/11 and Cuba, too!) on the second page...not to mention nu-punk/nu-goth meta.

Bless his little wankery soul, though I still think he's been watching too much Fight Club.

And "omfg u dumass" is just the generic reply to pretty much everything posted on the forums, though they sometimes mix it up with amusing insults and random offensive observations.

Too bad it wasn't just fight club: when that movie came out my kid sisters classmates organized their own "fight clubs" after class. Remember when being bad after school meant making out with some guy under the bleachers?

Sadly, our school didn't have bleachers, so the 'bad' kids had to settle for smoking in the middle of the street and dodging cars.

But I think the saddest thing is how many people missed the main point of Fight Club and fixated only on the beating-up-people part, or bits and pieces of "Project Mayhem". "Look! They blew up stuff! We can do it too! It's real anarchy!" Which reminds me of a Something Positive comic that I don't have the patience to dredge up.

You mean the whole, "You aren't perfect, but you aren't the worst thing in the world, either?" part? Or the part about simply being able to get on with your life part? Do people forget that the protagonist kills Tyler - the leader of Project Mayhem - at the end? (It's a shame that the death of the protagonist's boss didn't make it into the movie, though I have little criticism for it otherwise.)

Oh, wait! Look! They are beating each other up and blowing things up! Leik, isn't that so cool!

I think most people block out the fact that Tyler and the narrator are one and the same. And they completely forget Tyler's reasoning behind destroying the bank buildings (which were also done at night where no one would be hurt). They block out his speeches about learning who you really are by pushing yourself to your limits and focus on him blowing up building, and chanting Robert Paulson's name without getting the irony. (And it is a shame that they didn't have the death of the narrator's boss, because that was a nice little piece of writing when the narrator finally realized what 'he' had done, thanks to Tyler.)

but liek, that's waaaay too much to think about. thinking bad, fire pretty! Let's make each other bleed and cause random violence because it'll never effect us when we're older!

Heh heh, I wasn't even going into the messages concerning Tyler, just the themes behind the book as a whole. But you are right.

but liek, that's waaaay too much to think about. thinking bad, fire pretty! Let's make each other bleed and cause random violence because it'll never effect us when we're older!

Considering your post goes into the Tyler aspect, and one of the main topics was conformity (first to society, then to Project Mayhem), I am now going to snerk. A lot.

I have a tendency to focus on Tyler when discussing Fight Club's themes because he's such a verbal character and has many, many useful quotes to use when describing the themes and the way the characters work for/against them.

Snerk away! I'm always amused by self-proclaimed 'anarchists' who claim to follow Tyler's 'teachings', missing the point that, to him, they'd just be another Space Monkey.

I tend to focus on the themes as a whole, because Narrator ultimately rejects Tyler and Tyler's philosphys.

And the Narrator has some good quotes as well, but yeah...Tyler has more.

And in being a Space Monkey, you are just as much of a conformist as you are when you live within the consumer society. < / irony >

[info]sanguinary

True. Though I always liked the book's ending, where even though he's rejected Tyler and his philosophies, Project Mayhem's still going on, and everyone thinks he's still Tyler, so he hasn't escaped Tyler's influence.

And they both have really good quotes, but Tyler's are usually more memorable (except for the "I am Jack's insert-in-the-blank" quotes).

When you really look it, no matter where you go in society, as long as you're a part of a group of people, you will always conform to the group's norm, even though you aren't a part of the society-in-general hierarchy. Conforming is just human nature when dealing with a group of peers, and the only way to be a 'true' individual is basically either accept the group norms and use them to their advantage, or to totally isolate yourself from society and people all together.

But again, most kids playing at anarchists aren't going to actually consider this side, and so they become space monkeys and trade in their free will and free thought for a delusion.

I think I prefer the movie ending, actually. The book ending has some definite good points, particularly where he is talking to God and reflecting on everything, but there's a certain finality to the movie ending that I liked.

Yeah, but if you are Space Monkey, you get to blow things up!

The middle of the street? Damn, ours just went to a nearby cafe that allowed smoking. (R.I.P. Edible Complex.)

Well, our school had 250 people, max, so the closest cafe was a five minute walk away and liek, that was too far for them. They couldn't smoke directly across from the school because it was technically still school property, and the Kinsmen Hall was right beside that. When they got kicked off of that and threats of police involvement, they went down and started smoking on one of the teacher's front yards. She turned on the sprinklers and sprayed them until they buggered off. So finally, they decided to stand in the middle of street to smoke. There was always the vague hope that they'd get hit by a car sometime, but it never happened.

Well, hey, it works on cats when they jump on the table.

My school only had 300 people, but the cafe was close enough and enough of the smokers had cars that it was workable. Location is key, I guess.

There was a lot of bitter grumbling at school when they returned with wet pants and shirts, and how unfair it was that they couldn't leave their butts on her front yard.

And we weren't allowed to drive anywhere in cars/etc during the noon hour. Just a few weeks ago, some of my little sister's classmates got a week's suspension for getting in the back of a pick-up truck to drive around the town during noon hour. Because, after all, a week away from school is going to teach a bunch of 15-17 year-old kids to behave.

This school seems to have a knack for pulling in over-reacting principals who don't get that an out-of-school suspension is bascially just a week's break for these kids. One of the boys in my sister's class went out and worked for that week, and made about $500 or so. What a lesson, huh?

I totally agree with you there. I went to school with twenty other kids, and of the twenty kids, three didn't graduate and four others barely scrapped by, only so they could go and find themselves a trade. But then again, of the three who didn't graduate at all, one's pregnant with her second child (and this is only two years after highschool), one's working on the rigs, and probably will his entire life, and the other is probably sleeping around with anything that moves. Some people just don't want to work.

Any how now we do not know what to do, we want to start a succesful anarchy but we dont want to be assosicated with these dumb asses. Any Ideas?

Why did Dr. Phill pop into my head? Anachy self-help. ::Giggles.:: Or maybe a Jerry Spring episode. "Up next, we have failed anarchist!"

But the whole part about society crushing individuality made me groan and want to bash my head up against the wall. And my history teach would be rolling over in his grave, were he dead. But he's not, and thus is spared.

I'm pretty sure there's a line in the book where the narrator describes what happened to them being a love trangle (Marla love the Narrator who love Tyler who loves to destory stuff). That's perfect Jerry Springer material.

And that's why I love CKY. Because only in the CKY-fandom is the sentence "Drink your ass like wine" canon.

Besides, society isn't that repressive. It may be hard-wired into our brains...*remembers seeing something in neuropsych about the organization of monkey troops and human society*
