Brutal Honesty takes on the Atkins Diet
Christiana posts a rant about the Atkins diet in Brutal Honesty. There are the inevitable supporters (with tasty mini-wank), as well as the leagues of Atkin's supporters.

The best wank is under the 'why do you care?' banner, however. And there is an attractive little Atkin's was fat mini-wank elsewhere.

Ignore the voices of reason; they are but a few pebbles against the rising sea of wank.

Whoops. forgot to log in.
(anon above is me obviously).

In addition, I didn't think a diet would bring out so much argument. For me, just looking at the Atkins plan gives me heartburn and the ketosis breath is aversive to me. Then again none of these diet gurus seem to be able to make up their minds, same with the media. Sugar is the devil! No, it's carbs! No, it's fat! No, it's not getting enough carbs! No, it's carbs again!

And then you have people like my "Fit for Life" professor, who claim that eating a bowl of Coco Puffs with chocolate milk is a healthier way to start the day than buttered toast and tea.

Selling a Diet

Seriously... I'm always suspicious of someone trying to sell me anything, whether it's a playstation or a diet. Everyone wants to make a profit; anyone who claims they don't is probably hiding something.

I have always personally wanted to see evangelical vegans and evangelical Atkins advocates duke it out.

"We're designed to eat a protein-rich diet, BITCH!"
"LIES! Prehistorical humans were vegetarians!"
"Yeah? What about those mammoth bones WITH BITE MARKS?"
"You just made that up!"
"I never!" *hits vegan with a stick*
"Ow!" *throws rock at Atkins guy*
...etc.

I will, of course, be eating a pepperoni pizza, or perhaps a bowl of Pasta Carbonara while watching this silliness.

I am such a bitchy carnivore. XD My dream is to one day have a house where there will be a dedicated computer monitor in the kitchen, whose only purpose is to send email to PETA. Every time I eat meat, I would send them an email to tell them about it.
"Dear PETA. Today I had fried chicken. I decided the chicken was named Clucky. Cluckity-cluck-cluck-CLUCKY! I particularly enjoyed eating Clucky's skin, as it was most flavorful. I may finish Clucky off later by spreading some barbecue sauce on him and sticking him in the oven for a few minutes."

Personally, I think someone who designs a diet that tells you a handful of pork rinds is a healthier snack than a piece of fruit is smoking the $3 crack.

After all, $3 crack is carb-free.

Ah, yes: "just get off your lazy ass and exercise". That doesn't explain why I gained 60 pounds in 3 months after going on antidepressants (while going to the gym three times a week). The truth is that there are a number of reasons that people gain weight that have absolutely nothing to do with how much or how little you eat.

I've been doing a fairly casual version of the South Beach Diet since October, and I've lost weight. I haven't cut out carbs, but I have changed the whole way I eat: not skipping meals then binging, eating much less sugar and refined flour and more whole grains and vegetables, and cooking more instead of eating processed food. I'm not skinny, and I doubt I ever will be--but my blood pressure and my blood sugar are both down, and I'll happily settle for that.

I really like the bit about that you burn muscle before you burn fat. That highly amused me.

I have mixed feelings about Atkins myself. People abuse it like any other diet and it is clearly not for everyone. I think no diet is for everyone. We all have different bodies and different metabolisms. But on the other hand, my brother lost a lot of weight on Atkins and he's kept it off. He's been doing it the right way and he doesn't even crave carbs anymore. My mom tried it and it wasn't for her. I suppose you should take diets with a grain of salt.

That bit's true. It's why a starvation diet is a really, REALLY bad idea. You can die of a heart attack before you have time to die of malnutrition.

They're nowhere near as bad as Herbalife.

My best friend and his girlfriend went on Herbalife. I tried it, found that there is stuff in it that no one who has a mood disorder should take, not to mention, I'm not fond enough of sweets to live on dessert (milkshakes twice a day? no thanks).

It has, unfortunately, put quite a bit of distance between us, though perhaps not quite as much as if they converted to Christianity and decided that they needed to save my soul. She's lost a lot of weight, but she's still almost as big as me, and she's also become one of those "Herbalife for life" people.

He's still close to 400#, and it worries me because he's one of those people who actually is so fat he can barely move.

I jumped in an wanked. Because I am one of those Atkins freaks. *hangs head* It's the only diet that has ever worked for me, and I have PCOS anyway, so I really *should* be doing the low carb thing.

It just irritates me that Atkins gets this bad rap, like all Atkins dieters do is sit around and eat slabs of meat or something. I'm sure you'd get the same reaction from people who do Weight Watchers if you talked about how portion control=having enough self control to go to bed with a half empty stomach every single night until you've starved yourself into a 30 pound weight loss. (Because that was what it was like for me when I was on Weight Watchers, only I didn't lose more than five pounds for the year I was on it...)

I suspect, as with all diets, that it's a matter of the individual's problem that results in weight gain.

WW worked for me -- I dropped nearly 20 lbs in 6 months. My problem WAS portion control and snacking on the side: I regularly ate far more than I needed to, and so I was just fine.

I've always been suspicious of anyone who says that anything other than a basic, balanced diet, good hydration, and a bit of regular exercise is the weight loss cure-all.

I gotta say, I'm dubious of the whole Atkins thing. Because my mother tried it the first time around, and while she did lose weight, she's got a shitload of health problems now that can probably be blamed on that. Dude, there is a reason people eat carbohydrates, and as much as I'd like to lose those last twenty pounds, I'm not willing to fuck with my body's metabolism that radically.

Also, I really like bread products.

The thing that really gets my goat? Low-carb beer. Jesus, people! If you want to lose weight so badly, STOP DRINKING BEER. It's better than drinking crappy adultered "lite" shit.

Atkin's is ood for people who don't maintain muscle easily, if they eat a LOT of vegetables and very lean meat.

Most people say they're doing the "Atkin's" diet and eat lots of cheese, red meat, and fatty foods. They either don't lose weight, or they lose weight and develop health problems.
