Animal rights wank over controversial car advertisment.
OP's note: the ad link provided is clearly NOT worksafe or animal-safe, and really shouldn't be viewed by the squeamish or small children.

A couple of weeks or so ago, Ford and its advertising agency in the UK, Ogilvy & Mather, produce an advertisement for their newest care, the SportsKa,which is supposed to be a more masculine version to the Ka, which is viewed as a woman's vehicle.

The ad in question depicts a cat climbing onto the car and getting decapitated by the car's sunroof window, but the ad, according to Ford, was never designed to be seen on national TV in the UK. Rather, it was "intended as a 'viral marketing' tactic - designed to be sent via the internet from one individual to another". That doesn't stop the usual critics from expressing their outrage over the ad.

Enter the animal_rights community at LiveJournal, a breeding ground for decent animal-rights-related wankery, especially when it comes to people's dining habits, but that's wank for another day.

Uberczech gets wind of the controversial ad, and posts it in animal_rights and the members react with predictable outrage.

It's all small, very neat and very compact.

Is it wank? Probably not.

But is it whiny? Oh yes.

And a good example of just how over-predictable the animal rights people are over ads that were (bad taste or no) intended to be humorous (I should know; I used to be an animal rights supporter and I know first-hand just how over-sensitive they can be).

That was pretty much the same response it got when someone posted it on tws_support. I don't really see the animals rights folks as being that wanky. Sorry, but I just don't see disgust and/or horror as being inappropriate responses to such a gruesome commercial.

I agree, I mean I don't see how 'our sunroof will decaptiate your pet' as being a big selling point.

Maybe the animal rights people are overreacting, but the commerical was awful and I can't see why anyone would think it was a 'good idea'.

Not a big fan of decapitating cats, but my first instinct would be *eye roll, ignore*

Tara,
were any kittens killed in the process of this masturbation?

If you severed the arteries in the neck blood would spray out. It'd be like there was an explosion of blood. There's none in the video.

...and how, exactly, do you know what a decapitated cat looks like, Mr Animal Rights?

I think it's impossible to love that comment too much. That's just a beautiful line that really needs to be iconized.

I think I would be more horrified by that commercial if I didn't see the "White Chicks" trailer - which is just cruel to everybody.

I did think it was funny in a bizarre way, but... yeah, I don't get why I would want a cat-decapitating car. I'm not reading the wank because I think the outrage is pretty much founded.

Well, if they were trying to make the car seem "masculine" I suppose that would work with a lot of people, sadly...I know quite a lot of guys I went to school with considered it a sign of their masculinity to hate/torture/kill cats. Mostly just hate them, but I heard boasting about worse things every now and then. Sometimes crap happened with other animals too, though...there were a couple perfectly ordinary average guys who at one point tortured and beat a goat to death on somebody's farm.
I'm all for eating meat, and hunting (responsibly) and all, but so many guys thinking it's great to make animals suffer for the hell of it gives me the creeps.

If they wanted to play up the masculine-ness of the SportKa they should've just gotten a bunch of guys to drive around a field while they toss about a giant soccer ball.

That'd be considered "masculine" and animal-friendly all that the same time.

Well, unless you count the number of bugs squashed to make it... :/

Some thoughts:

1) The ad amused me greatly. (I'm a sick fuck first thing in the morning and offer no apologies)

2) Imo, it could only have been bettered by decapitating a curious small child. (I have high hopes for a sequel)

3) I'm a girl and now I want a SportsKa! *feminine squee* Therefore I think Ford've missed their demograph by a mile. Oh irony, how pretty. :-)

4) The animal rights hysteria really needs an influx of PETA think-of-the-kitty, burn-Beyonce-burn hysterics.

5) My microwavable popcorn just pinged. Woohoo!

I thought it was kind of funny too, although I completely admit that is due to my being a sick fuck too. It would have been funnier if it was a siamese, but what are you gonna do? I certainly wouldn't mock anyone who didn't think it funny. I guess I sort of saw it more as a WB cartoon, if that makes any sense. I'm not quite clear on why the ad killing the bird is considered acceptable for broadcast though.

p.s. won't someone think of the headless children?

Why do people consider it masculine to hate cats? Hell, Robert Heinlein liked cats and whatever you say about the guy, he certainly had all his testosterone in.

Cats are seen as "girl pets", I think. A lot of comedy's been done about guys having to deal with their girlfriend's cat, and too many guys actually take the stuff they hear in standup or see on sitcoms/commercials as an actual standard of masculinity.

Ugh. I consider myself to have a sick sense of humor(I have a whole repetoire of dead baby jokes), I don't particularly like cats, and my reaction is the same as those in the animal_rights community. And I didn't really see wank there, either.

God. Fuck you, Ford.

i would boycott ford for that, if i thought they were responsible

Okay, people need to get a grip. It wasn't real. There's no way in hell. The no blood part should have been enough to indicate that. And so, since no animal's rights were infringed upon, why get you panties all knotted up?

I'm not really seeing how it glofies cat decapitation, or somesuch. There's no way anyone with a brain would think they want you to kill kitties. They just want you to buy a car that kills kitties. So really, it glorifies Christine.

I doubt "Ahh the power of cheese." gets this much reaction there. The number of kitties decapitated by evil Sports Kas will greatly outnumber the number of cows OMG RAPED uhh... murdered milked and eaten as a result.

I'm going with the "kitties are fluffy and like to cuddle, while cows are large, smelly, and obviously insane from close up" theory. Look into the eye of a cattlebeast, and you will know madness, my friends.

Ditto on that. Anything that's so stupid that it drowns when it rains because it stares up with its mouth open wondering what's hitting it, deserves to be eaten.

Whereas cats merely lick their asses.
