Many of the members of [info]bad_rpers_suck have a term for overly flowery RP language involving "emeraldine orbs". They call it "thesaurus rape". [info]last_thylacine calls it "merely [knowing] more English than the average player, and the average player feeling inadequate".

Voluminous indignation on the part of the populace ensues. Lyke OMG.

Oho, she linked to my post on the adult group. Seems that she got her panties shoved up her ass over the phrase "borderline-pretentious" in my post. A thesaurus-raper strikes back!

Hah, that was you? The link doesn't work for me, but that makes it all nicely circular.

Yeah. Basically, I posted up one pose from a thesaurus-raper who'd joined in a scene I was doing on Taps, and said that his desc was filled with much the same sort of thing. The player himself didn't seem a bad guy, just that his poses were somewhat a mixture of stereotypical furry stuff and Shakesperean-level overflowing of language. It was more funny, than anything else, but apparently she took offense because, to judge from her post, it's the kind of pose she'd do herself. Or he'd do. Whatever thylacine is. Whatever gender they are, they're an admitted troll.

Ugh, one of those. Dear, if you truly knew and loved the English language, you'd know when to stop masturbating with it.

You'd also know the meaning of "concise."

I need to make an icon about this. *goes off to do so*

Is there a [info]jurisimprudence law about how admitting to hypocrisy invalidates your point? Because if not, there really should be.

See, the thing is, most people have given up on saying, 'you're immoral,' because that's so subjective, so you say, 'you're not conforming to YOUR moral standards' = you're a hypocrite.

Except that stupid people like this are like, "Why, yes, yes I am. Bingle bingle fwip!"

That seems to be his M.O. "Why yes, I am a hypocrite, and a troll, and an annoying fuckwad. Hahaha! Aren't I clever?"

I'm waiting for someone to trick him into admitting that he's just plain stupid. :)

Hooooolllly shit!

That person's ego needs one of beeping devices that big trucks use when they back up.

That way we can have some sort of warning for these people.

This person seems like the sort of poser I would enjoy playing with, truthfully.

What a wonderfully appropriate typo.

Actually, it's not a typo, as she's using "poser" as a reference to someone writing poses on a mu*. It's more an amusing double-meaning. n.n

Yeah. It's sort of a distinguishing thing... you post on a message board, you pose on a muck.

Alas!

Verbosity doesn't equal good writing. Having a huge vocabulary is wonderful, but saying something like pervaricator when you can just say liar makes you sound like a jackass and like you're trying to talk over your audience. No one likes to believe they're thought of as stupid.

Her personal journal is filled with little gems like this:

This is the precise mentality which makes the rest of the world see us as barbarians. We are barbarians, seeking to overthrow the world whilst putting blind faith in a president which has lied to us nearly from day one. We are out to prove that we have the larger penis, and we do not care how such a mentality will be seen. I am, again, ashamed to be an American. (Before anyone starts up with their snide comments about my leaving--trust me, that is the plan. The plan is to leave this godforsaken moral and spiritual wasteland.)

The arrogance that veritably exudes from each poorly thought-out sentence is the precise reason much of the rest of the world despise us and think us to be fools. We have and do, time and again, prove the old adage correct: "Better to keep silent and be thought a fool, lest you open your mouth and remove all doubt." We prove that correct each time we, as a country, open our mouths and make silly and inane judgements.

Everyone knows that America is a monolith! Heeee.

I love this phrase: The arrogance that veritably exudes from each poorly thought-out sentence.... How perfectly appropriate.

May I reccomend Venus, or I've heard that Mercury is lovely this time of year.

Personally I'd let to get this person as far away from my country as possible.

Nothing like a pretentious git who claims to be a better writer and then writes something like that. Hmm.

I probably should pay more attention to this community, as I am on it. *shakes fist*

overly flowery RP language involving "emeraldine orbs". They call it "thesaurus rape"

I don't see a problem with it if it's used in moderation, personally. If EVERY OTHER WORD is a synonym for "blue eyes", however...

This is why I don't RP with people I don't know. I stick with those who's styles don't piss the hell out of me.

I see this phenomenon more from the fanfic angle, but over-mentioning of eye color is one of my writing pet peeves in any setting, even when the thesaurus isn't used (though I'd personally like to mail one to every Heero/Duo (Gundam Wing) fanwriter who thinks amaryllis=violet). What really makes me giggle about this one is that when I gave out a set of awards for well-done details in Trowa/Quatre fics, the award for "Best Use of Eye Color" went to a fic using a synonym for "emeraldine orbs." Except the author of said fic had the brains to simply use "green eyes."

*sporfle!*

...amaryllis? The only amaryllises I've ever seen were bright red, IIRC. That sounds like one scatterbrained fangirl's coinage that got out of hand if ever there was one.

By now it's nigh unto fanon, it's so common. Since some of the prettier amaryllises I've seen were finely striped white and red, I prefer to interpret "amaryllis eyes" as meaning bloodshot ones.
