Ah, mock_the_stupid, how I love thee.

The OP explains how he posted a link in his journal with the warning "don't click this link, it will do crazy things to your computer, you have been warned." A young boy clicks the link at school and gets in trouble. (The link is apparently to a porn search engine.) The kid's parents ask the OP to write a letter to the school explaining that it was a joke--"internet humor," as someone else phrases it--and that it was basically a curiosity-kills-the-cat thing, and not an intentional attempt on the kid's part to get to porn.

The OP refuses: "I replied that I would do nothing of the sort, and if his son has problems following simple instructions he deserves every kick up the arse he gets. I ask you, people of mock_the_stupid.. which part of 'do not click this link' did he fail to understand, and secondly, how many of you have just clicked the link?"

Others tell the OP he's a jerk, and the OP insists that they're morons, too. Wank ensues. I understand the OP's point, but... he's being sort of self-righteous about making it. Over and over and over, in fact.

Once upon a time there was once a tribe of humans that wasn't at all curious about anything. They were very peaceful and happy. Then, one day a neighboring tribe began idly speculating about what it'd be like to beat the crap out of them, take their food and shelter and throw them all out into the snow to die. You can fill in the rest yourself. The end.

So, lessee, he's how old... seventeen? Young enough to be an immature asswart, old enough to dress it up in pseudo-psychobabble....

Wow, I didn't even think to check his age (community post and all). That... explains a lot, for some reason. (I'm not saying all teenagers are asshats. I like teenagers. Well, not that way. ANYWAY.)

If he says he's born in 1974, then of course we should trust him, because we all know nobody ever lies on the internet, right?

...well, he could be telling the truth, I guess. But if so...damn, man.

There is always the possibility of lieing, but still, to be like that at that age "damn" is just about all you can say.

True.

But apparently he's older than I am. No excuse, then! Even I can't get away with that shit.

Wasn't there a study that proved that it was human nature to do something that you are specifically told not to do?

Or is that just something my mom told me, that is true nonetheless.

Seriously. And part of the problem is, sometimes I'll link to trainwreck-type stuff on my weblog (this is a link to text entry/link, not a trick) and say, "Dude, you totally don't want to click on this," knowing full well that people will, but they'll see whatever it is and go, "Yeah, that's gross/nasty/shocking. I see what she meant." It's sort of an "Ewww! This is terrible! You gotta taste this!" thing. But I never mean it in the "Wow, if you do click on this, you're a moron and you deserve to have your computer bombarded by porn spyware" sense.

So very true. If there was a big red button somewhere that said "DANGER: End of the world button. Do not touch", the world wouldn't last five minutes.

If there was an End Of The World Button, you need to label it 'Engine Rehadrator'. And label the 'Death By Ten Thousand Volts' button with the 'End' sign

On one hand I was taught that one should not click on links given in emails from people I don't know.

On the other hand we're not born internet savy and it's my experience that the more you tell someone NOT to do something, the more they're gonna want to do it.

IMO, the people at the school are being asshats, too. You can get porn popups/spyware from searching for all kinds of seemingly innocent things, especially if you have little internet experience.

My computer teacher once explained it to our class this way: "If you use the internet enough, eventually you will find porn in an internet source. It has happened to me, it has happened to adults I know, it has happened to students before. So, I will not take action if I see a porn site on your history. However, the software on your computers monitors time spent on each site you visit. If I see that you are spending more time on a porn site than it takes to determine that it is a porn site and take action to leave it, then you will be in trouble."

My computer teacher was cool. She let a class watch Ghost in the Shell when she had a substitute, explaining that the nudity didn't count because it was all android nudity, not a human.

Wouldn't it not count even if it was a human, because it's animated and therefore doesn't show any *real* skin?

Or even if you type in an internet address and misspell it or leave off part of the end of the address or even use .com when you're supposed to use .net

You wouldn't believe the porn I was bombarded with one time when I was still in high school and I was looking up the Australian search engine Web Wombat and I think all I might have done was forget to tag on a .au and MAN! I thought I'd killed the computer with porn overload!

My friend once was going to rhymezone.com so he could write some poetry for class. If you accidentally leave the h out, you get redirected to hanky-panky-college.net. It was a learning experience for everyone.

Also works with livejournal!
