Militant fat guy wank!
From NAAFA's message boards, which are hotbeds of amazing wank until they get deleted and the members who disagree with the party line are banned, as are their ISPs and e-mail servers:

"We dressed up in bathing suits and disrupted a meeting for people who were discussing weight loss surgery! One lady started crying because it had taken her a long time to work up the courage to come here and now we'd ruined it, but we laughed at her! VIVA LE FAT!"
"Hear hear!"
"Hey, maybe that was a dicky thing for you guys to do--you're making us look like PETA."
"HATE CRIME! Also, we pity you."
"OK, then I agree that this surgery is bad and that you were right. Please don't ban me."
"Good! Now let's focus on how we're being oppressed! People who want us to lose weight are just like Hitler, you know."

I wish they hadn't deleted the one where they refused to admit that eating more calories than you burn is what makes you fat. That was classic.

The fat acceptance movement, just like the road to hell, is paved with good intentions. Not that we shouldn't accept our bodies for what they are and whatnot, but this is ridiculous.

Agreed. I like myself pretty well, but there's always room for improvement. I'm not happy weighing this much; I think I'd look better and feel better if I was 50 lbs. lighter. Should I be taken to task for that? Should fat people stand in the aisles of Toys R Us and give overweight people a hard time when they buy DDR and a pad? Should they stand in nothing but a string bikini in front of the rice cakes at the supermarket? How the Hell does that help anybody?

Being one of those rubenesque types, and not ashamed of it, I realise there are health risk associated with being obese (and according to the BMI, I am, even though most folks who look at me would say I'm not). There's accepting your body and loving yourself for who and what you are and then there's living in denial about the health risks involved in being overweight.

Pesonally, I'd like to live a good long time and if that means I have to lose weight, I'll do it.

I actually DO oppose surgeries that involve removing or altering body parts to lose weight. I think it's irresponsible and extremely dangerous. Just about everyone I know who did get WLS regrets it. Totaly and completely.

My attitude is and always will be, eat right, exercise regularly and take care of yourself and you'll be healthy. Some people are naturally big people and that's okay. Besides, in all honesty, I was one sickly little thing when I was skinny and my health actually improved when I gained weight. :P Go figure.

Personally, I didn't LIKE what these people did to get their point across...I think they had the right idea in giving the alternate point of view and providing some eductation about the cons of WLS, but prancing around in bathing suits and chanting wasn't exactly the classiest of ways of getting their message across.

Granted, I think WLS should only be administered in extreme, emergency situations, but these people still frighten me.

Oh, I agree...weight loss surgery though should be a last resort and only done at the advice of a medical practitioner. Sounds like this meeting was a bunch of WL Surgeons peddling it as something to be approached like some sort of merchandise. Still, all concerned in this situation scared me.

Exactly! I mean, if you're healthy and you're 'overweight', hey, be happy, don't try to lose weight if you don't want. But if you have problems related to your weight..you need to do something about it. Yeah, you can still be proud of your weight...but you won't be able to for long because you'll be dead from diabetes or a heart attack.

I am really shocked about the stuff i read on there. I always thought that group carried a very positive message, i had no idea some of them were nuts. The PETA comparison was a valid one.

Word to all of the above...I mean, I hate the notion that anyone over a size 4 is fat. There are a lot of people who are big(ger) and still active and healthy--I'm a size 16 me'self but I am quite athletic. But people who weigh 400 or 500 pounds are not healthy by any means...I see them in the mall and they can barely walk, are always out of breath. They don't have to look like Twiggy, but taking off some of the extra weight has got to improve their health. Though according to the folks on this board I'm just a 'size nazi' for saying that. Er, sorry, no.

And as I skim down even further...

STAND UP AND TAKE ACTION. BE COUNTED. BE HEARD. NOT BE SILENT ANY MORE WHILE BEING KILLED WITH SCALPELS AND HATRED.

Holy crap.

Don't forget:

Kittychick, Size Acceptance does address those issues. Just not in the unproductive and cruel manner you would prefer. Your contempt for size acceptance is not fueled by its ignoring those issues, and all too common "complaing" from those who don't have a point to make. Your contempt is because of the issues we do discuss and our opinions on them. You shield your petty hatred by spreading ignorance.

Kittychick dared to point out that some people would rather lose weight than get sleep apnea and ride around on a reinforced Rascal. The bitch!

Personally, that sentence makes me envision someone running down the street with a scalpel cackling maniacally.

And that image makes me laugh my ass off.

Not literally, 'cause, you know, then I'd be eval!!!11.

Geez, what are they going to do next, force some large dying man off his diet because he should be happy with his size, despite the fact that said size is killing him? I know a lot of overweight people aren't neccesarily unhealthy, just the opposite, but really.

Sometimes being overweight is a problem, not a choice and personality statement, people!

It's appearing to me as a tangent of the old "there are fans of EVERYTHING on the web" axiom. Everything, ev-ery-thing, whether most people consider it a problem or not, has people out there who think it's just fantastic and encourage it. Suicide, eating disorders (to both ends of the scale), self-mutilation, mental disorders of every stripe, abusive relationships - anything. Someone out there will cheer it on, even if it defies all earth logic.

I don't think this should stop, because I don't want to deign to tell people what to say and think - but I do think it's sobering.

This whole issue is getting filed under my "101 Reasons I Am Never Dating Again Even If I Could" list. The line between supporting someone despite their problems and encouraging them to worsen their problems is getting too blurred for my comfort. I fold.

Their term "slayers" makes me think of the Militant Deaf Movement... y'know, the guys that say hearing aid implants are "genocide"? And it's just as ridiculous, if not vastly moreso.

Oooh yeah...my uncle used to work with deaf people and he knew a couple like that. They considered their deafness a badge of honor and if any deaf person tried to get their hearing restored they were 'traitors' and 'going against god's plan'.

I'll add that like many others have said, there's a world of difference between realizing that you don't have to be Calista Flockhart skinny to be happy and sucessful, and being in total denial of a serious health problem.
