June 2008 Newsletter, vol. 12 Mirrored from the otw_news LJ Welcome to the second June issue of the OTW Newsletter! We're constantly on the lookout for ways to keep fandom up-to-date and informed about what's going on behind the scenes here at OTW, so twice a month, Community Relations compiles updates about what the various committees are working on and we share them here. All issues of the newsletter will be tagged accordingly, so you can follow our progress chronologically. Academic Journal Update from The academic journal staff members are handling routine submissions in preparation for the first issue this fall. Accessibility, Design, and Technology Update from Naomi Novik No updates at this time. Board Update from This time it was floods, hail, and power outages conspiring to keep us down, but once again the Board managed to triumph over adversity, and spend time reviewing the Community Relations outreach plan and discussing some branding options. Community Relations Update from ComRel hosted a celebration of OTW's first birthday by throwing a multi-fandom convention at We have been discussing comment policies for the planned OTW website blog with the Website committee and looking forward, we are concentrating on outreach plans for this summer. Content Policy Update from Slow and steady wins the race, or so goes the old saw. I don't think anyone has ever won a marathon by being slow and steady, though, and writing the Archive's ToS and content policy much more closely parallels a marathon than a sprint. Good marathoners maintain a steady pace for most of the race, but tend to put on speed in the home stretch. I hope we qualify as good marathoners (metaphorically, at least), and I know that we're putting on speed in this, the home stretch. We're revising and restructuring the drafts, and having more frequent meetings and extra discussion outside of meetings, with the hope that the policy will earn a medal at the end for its comprehensive coherency and inclusiveness. Development & Membership update from DevMem update from Ignaz: We're making progress on revising our donation webform, and recently submitted a request to Volunteers for a swag researcher, so stay tuned for that post. Things continue to move forward on the third-party fundraiser front. Elections No update at this time. Financials No update at this time. Legal Update from No updates at this time. Open Doors Update from Francesca Coppa The Open Doors project would like to announce its version 1.0 webpage at: http://opendoors.transformativeworks.or Public Relations Update from PR has had a lot of traveling among its members, so we haven't met recently. We're continuing to work on ongoing projects, and the travel should settle down for us soon! Systems Update from Systems is doing our mad sysadmin thing, improving our backup process, the wiki, our reliability, and communication with the organization. Translations Update from We're still recruiting betas (for already-existing language teams) and new translators (for not-yet-represented languages). Also, we've been spending a lot of time figuring out how to combine the translations with the website interface Volunteers and Recruiting Update from Accessibility, Design, & Technology is keeping us busy, adding new coders all the time. Webmasters Update from The website committee is now testing its Drupal installation for the next version of the OTW website. We are surveying the other committees to make sure we have all necessary features, and reviewing the site for its usability and accessibility, so that everyone can learn about and participate in OTW. Wiki Update from The Wiki Committee have set up our policies in a sandbox wiki and told the rest of the organization to have at it - they are our first round of guinea pigs to provide us with feedback! We've also been working with the Systems Committee to install MediaWiki software and build in additional features of what will be the final home of the wiki. Our call for volunteers to help us beta test and populate will come very soon! What details would you like to know? Please give ComRel a helping hand and let us know!
