11:21 am - "Master and the Wolf" 5th wave ends

chance
We've gone pasted all of the extensions given for stories for this wave of the Snape/Lupin fuh-q-fest at http://chance.slashcity.net/masterandthewolf/, expect for a few stories due at the start of the 6th wave on the 1st of May. Any story I get after this point, will be kept until the start of the 6th wave, before going up.

Due to the small number of stories for this wave, compared to earlier waves, I'm seriously considering doing a shake up of challenges etc. (Lore has already given a few good suggestions :) ). Though I will be allowing stories using the current set of challenges, as I've already had people asking if they could claim them for the next wave, as well as the stories that are still due from the 5th wave of course. Any suggestions to increase the number of stories written for the next wave will be very gratefully received - elrond@paradise.net.nz.

chance
I've added 5 new stories since the start of February to the Snape/Lupin fuh-q-fest page at http://chance.slashcity.net/masterandthewolf/. With the exception of 3-4 more stories, which are due in the next 10 days that is it for the 3rd wave :)

3:50 pm - "Master and the Wolf" update

chance
I seem to be getting new stories on a regular enough bases that I can update the Snape/Lupin fuh-q-fest at http://chance.slashcity.net/masterandthewolf/, at least twice a week. The latest update was yesterday, with 1 new stories. (Though all of the new stories recently, seem to be knee-deep in warnings for things like non-con and mpreg, for those who don't like those sorts of things...).

2:41 am - Seeking HP_Chanslash group?

redina
There was some recent HP wank and it reminded me of a comment in another wank thread where reference to an additional HP chan group was made.

I did some tracking through wank threads and found the HP_chanslash Smart Groups' 'owner' address and emailed the correct address stated for joining. No email bouncing occurred and I'm curious if this group was discontinued?

I know the other Yahoo!Groups one died.

2:05 pm - "Master and the Wolf" update

chance
In the last week I've added 7 new stories and a new to the fest page picture for a story from the 1st wave, to the Snape/Lupin fuh-q-fest pages at http://chance.slashcity.net/masterandthewolf/. There is still a little over a week to go fro the writers with extentions, so I should be getting more stories in the 6-7 days :)

8:32 am - "Master and the Wolf" update

chance
I've added 2 new stories to the archive of the Snape/Lupin Fuh-Q-Fest at http://www.chance.slashcity.net/masterandthewolf/. They are "Evolution" by The Treacle Tart and "Almost Too Late" by Soceress.

An important note is the 2nd wave is ending at the end of July, so I will stop accepting new challenge claims in about 2 weeks time.

Hello all! I'm just pimping my own journal</i> out (yea, I know). Fandom journal only (with the very occasional RL sniping), with rareslash (Harry/Hagrid, anyone?) and -much more common- Harry/Snape.

People in the UK (and maybe elsewhere) may wish to know that http://www.livejournal.com/community/accio_uk/, the British Harry Potter con, has finally announced that it really is going ahead next July and will be at Reading University.

I'm not involved with running it (I paid that debt to society long since!) but I'm dispensing advice* and am definitely going to be there. If their plans come to fruition, it should be great fun. Running it at a University should provide something of an experience, I've only been to one 'real' convention at a University, and that was one of the Holodecks (which were Star Trek conventions) and if I remember rightly it went quite well. I had a lot of fun, anyway. So I have high hopes of this one.

11:26 am - If I ever read this plot again

lexin
[I put this on HPAD, my Harry Potter adult list today and I'll copy it to lj when I get home]

If I ever read this plot again, it will be a day too soon:
(1) the Dursleys beat (in some versions sexually abuse) Harry;
(2) he is rescued by Snape;
(3) they go to live in sumptuously appointed Snape Manor, because Snape is extraordinarily wealthy. The décor and contents of Snape Manor are described in loving (exhaustive and exhausting) detail;
(4) despite some pretty angsting, Harry recovers from the abuse with astonishing speed and without any apparent behavioural problems;
(5) for reasons not adequately explored (and despite (4)) Harry and Snape sleep together;
(6) for reasons not adequately explored, they are soul mates;
(7) they settle down together, apparently forever.

Why do I hate this so much? Let me count the ways.

(1) is not adequately supported by canon. The Dursleys are not in the running for foster family of the year, but the theory that they beat Harry half to death on a daily basis simply doesn't hold water. And if that's the writer's premis, she needs to explore in more detail why it's happening, why the neighbours haven't noticed (if they haven't) and why they haven't reported it to the local social services department (if they have noticed). In a great many of these stories, closely described physical abuse seems to take the place of actual suffering on Harry's part - we hear he's beaten, we don't hear what that does to him.

(2) Why Snape? Surely it's much more convincing that he'd be rescued by (choose one) Sirius (if pre-OotP), Remus, Arabella Figg, or McGonagall. (As an aside, there seem to be an awful lot of McGonagall haters out there). Better still, IMO, if Harry rescues himself - the Harry of the books is perfectly capable of running away (PoA). That doesn't necessarily mean that there can't be a Snape/Harry pairing, but it would mean the writer has to work a bit harder for it, which may be the cause of the problem.

(3) Snape Manor. I hate it, hate it, hate it. The Snape as played by AR does not have a manor hidden away somewhere. He's a grammar school boy who pulled himself out of the mire by his bootstraps and lives in fear of going back there. The Snape in the books likewise, witness the grey nightshirt in GoF and the greying underpants in OotP. He's just that bit too desperate to be wealthy - and I think that was also one of the initial problems between him and James Potter and Sirius Black. James in particular strikes me as being the sort of boy sent to boarding school with galleons burning a hole in his pockets. Snape is the sort of boy sent to school with very limited pocket money which had to be hoarded for the whole year - or none at all.

(4) I may be alone in this (but I suspect I'm not), but Harry in canon already seems to me to be astonishingly well adjusted for the background he's been given. This even given his teenager-y outbursts and peculiarities in OotP, which I know some people didn't much care for. Give him a worse background, and it makes even less sense. Abused children do not (in general) behave particularly well, and (as far as I can work out) the worse the abuse, the worse the resulting behaviour.

(5) is the point of the story, but too often it leaps out at the reader rather like a deer jumping out in front of your car, or a sudden attack by a raging hippo. It's a really huge, "Where the fuck did that come from? Why are they suddenly shagging like sex-starved bunnies who've heard that sex is about to be banned?"

(6) 'Nuff said. I've seen good versions of the soul mates stories (Nym leaps to mind) but too often it takes the place of plot, logic, character exploration or even good writing. Too often the writer could not be bothered to think of a reason to get the characters together and substitutes 'soul mates' as a plot device. I believe the same happens in Harry/Draco stories, though I don't read them - can anyone confirm or deny?

I'm not saying that these can't be used, or that they can't be put together into a good story - there may be some genius out there who can manage to make this melange into something wonderfully fresh and new. But just recently, I've not seen it. It's the same old same old. Anyone seen any thing different?

11:48 am - Lockhart Fuh-Q-Fest

chance
The first wave in the Lockhart Fuh-Q-Fest hopefully is going to start in the next couple of weeks, but I thought people would like to know about it now while there's still time to suggest scenarios and join as one of the writers. The mailing list is the Lockhartfics list at yahoogroup, to subscribe send a email here or goto the webpage. The actual archive for the fest can be found here http://chance.slashcity.net/lockhartff. Which has all of the current pairings and challenges etc on it.

When was The Mirror of Maybe deleted from ff.net? So there was some rough sex! It was still only an R-rating IMO. Bleugh. Having to join another mailing list so I don't miss any bits.

3:06 pm - Story recommendation

lexin
This is one story, one of the very few, that while it was coming down on the Snape/Harry list on Yahoo! I was waiting for the parts, and was copying it into a file as they came. I really enjoyed it. It's called "The Courtship of Harry Potter" by Diana Williams, and I highly recommend it. The link is here

She explains it thus: This story is based on a challenge from DarkLady, to wit "Suppose it were a usual thing in Wizarding culture that a young man take an older man as a lover/mentor. Mix in a flashy and ill-intentioned rival, and Snape's machinations to ensure that he is Harry's choice. Extra bunny - a clear period and ritual to the courtship, with the rival managing smoothly while Snape's gestures all appear to fall flat. Of course, our Harry is a better judge of character than that..." It was originally based on a challenge and is obviously Shape/Harry.

8:40 am - Thoughts on graduation

lexin
[info]potter_deviants are talking about 'graduation' in Harry Potter. I'm all out of fury on that one, I just assume that everyone knows how I feel about it, delete the story and pass on.

It's perfectly possible for Hogwarts to have a leavers ceremony, and it even if they have such a ceremony, why would they call it 'graduation'? If a writer's desperate to have a graduation ceremony, why not have one and call it something else?

One thing that's often occurred to me is that Hogwarts, though it's over 1000 years old (or so we're told) and set in a semi-Britain doesn't seem to have very many traditions with stupid names, at least, not compared with the RL old-established schools. I mean, it's perfectly possible for the students to have a leaving ceremony and call it "swoofling", or something like that. That seems far more credible to me than that they'd call it 'graduation'.

8:22 am - Pimping a convention

lexin
At the risk of boring the people who are friended to my jorunal, I think this will bear repeating. Good News today is that I found out about another British slash convention in addition to theK/S convention in August in Chester which I'm holding off registering for so that die-hard K/Sers (who'd get much more out of it than I would)can get in first.

This new convention is called Connotations, I know at least one of the people who are running it and the web site is here: Connotations

The dates are 3rd to the 5th October 2003 (i.e. this year), it's in Nottingham and I can't wait. Going to put my form in the post tomorrow morning. Relevance to this group (somewhat stretched, I admit) is that I will be going therefore there will be a big Harry Potter presence. I am that big Harry Potter presence.

11:37 am - Three recommendations

lexin
I don't have a recommendation page on my website (it's Red Rose Press but I'd imagine most of you know that) principally because I'm painfully aware that my taste in stories isn't going to be shared by everyone. I'm also more than aware of my unfortunate tendency to speak first and realise later (in one memorable case several years later) that my bluntness has been taken as rudeness. By then, it's usually too late.

That having been said, these are my three current favourite finished stories in the fandom - to my mind there's no point recommending anything unfinished.

The first is Telanu's Tea series, so called because it starts with the story "A Most Disquieting Tea". (The link I've given is to the home page, not direct to the story.) The pairing is Harry/Snape, but the most they've done in the ones published so far is kiss. The best of these so far is "Like a Glass", but I wouldn't start with that. It's not that they're faultless - being a Brit picker, I quibble at the use of words like 'graduate' - but she's really got the voices of Harry, Snape and Dumbledore pinned.

The second is Predatrix's "Love Song of Bastard and Idiot". Again, this is Harry/Snape, since that's what I'm into. Even if it wasn't a good story, which it is, there's the title, which is to die for. I do so wish I'd thought of that. One thing about Pred, her British English is faultless - and so it should be, she is British - and it is so nice to read something without the mental editor's blue pencil running.

And finally, there is the trio of which two are Perdition and Redemption by Adrienne - I have no link, can someone supply one? I know these are on the web somewhere but have no idea where because I loved them so much that I formatted them into Word and carry them around on my PDA - and how sad is that? I have no idea if this series is going to end up slash, but for once it doesn't matter because her characterisation is excellent. Again there is the odd reference which doesn't ring true (graduation again, I believe), but generally she's done a splendid job.

So, anyone else? Does anyone have any recommendations

lexin
Hi everyone I've captured so far (all three of you!), I know [info]lulinda has a group called [info]potter_deviants for general discussion. I envisage this group to be for slash discussion specifically, for people to pimp their stories and make recommendations. And anti-recommendations for those with flameproof underwear.
