A question for plucky internet detectives
Does anyone know if there are ways to communicate discreetly with someone else online? I'm talking about communicating with someone who has all the electronic devices they want at their disposal (iPhone, laptop...) but has their activity regularly checked by someone. I know they check text messages and probably e-mail and facebook profile. It probably doesn't stop there and I don't think creating a new e-mail adress or facebook profile or Twitter account would be such a good idea in the long run.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If that person has LJ you could start a private community and disable comment notifications. That could work, unless the person monitoring checks through their list of communities.

Only other idea I have is some sort of in-game chat. But I'm not much of a gamer so I don't know whether there's logs.

Chats without logs would definitely help!

chats in world of warcraft certainly aren't logged client-side unless screenshots are taken.

Also chats over Steam are not logged automatically - you'd have to copy and paste to a text document (or similar). So if you close the chat window POOF it's gone forever, again at least client-side.

There are web-based IRC clients which are essentially untraceable as long as you're sure to clear your history each time.

And I don't think that particular web-client logs anything client-side.

Sorry for the spammage. A basic intro to IRC is here if the person in question isn't aware of what it is. Usual caveats about clearing browser history apply.

Thank you so much! That looks really helpful.

TO avoid worrying about the history, firefox has a "private browsing" option. Go to tools > start private browsing. This would also help said person if they needed to browse for local organizations that might be of assistance to them. Or if they wanted to create a secret LJ or other account and cover their tracks.

Similarly, on Opera you can open a "private tab" or a "private window": http://help.opera.com/Windows/12.00/en/private.html

Thank you! I've been googling the various methods of private navigation with the most well-known browsers.

Google Chrome has the same feature, referred to as "incognito".

I like Chrome's incognito windows personally. It has a sneaky guy in a fedora.

I'd also suggest web based AIM clients like koolim, and meebo (although google just picked up meebo, so I have no idea how much longer it will be usable). They don't create a log unless you explicitly go in and save. Stay away from AIM express, since they've gotten the brilliant idea to tie in all their services and save all your conversations on their servers.

I'd also say how inclined are they towards getting a burn phone and hiding it? Rumor has it that Apple's going to release non-contract iPhones soon.

Meebo will close its messenger service on July 10 (which is bullcrap IMO, as it was by far its most useful service and I have friends in a country where the 'net is censored that found it quite useful, blah).

imo.im looks like a good alternative, but I haven't tested it thoroughly.

Very low tech, but you could share a doc in Google docs, and type in it at the same time, as chat, and then just don't save the changes.

Google docs is "very low tech"?

I feel so very old.

Google docs autosaves everything. I have not found a way to turn that off.

I'd suggest 'Kingdom Of Loathing' game PMs. It's a very simple online game that's as easy to access as webmail and other people might not think to check your account for messages.
