Draco Malfoy couldn’t do it. After all this time, he still found it difficult to say the words.

Frustrated, Draco pushed away from the marble tomb. He ran his fingers through his closely cropped hair (oh how his father would’ve protested) and gazed up into the night sky. Even the stars could provide no inspiration for him.

He turned away swiftly and headed back down the path. Perhaps in a month he’d try again, when he was truly ready.

The faint sound of feminine humming, accompanied by splashes of water caught his ear. Odd, he thought as he turned toward the lake. Draco knew that the students had already gone home for the summer holiday. There was hardly anyone around except for the staff, and he doubted that they’d be partial to a nighttime swim. Now curious, he decided to seek out the source. As he approached the lake, he spied a figure half-submerged in the water. He ducked quickly behind a tree and watched as the person, clearly a woman, came close to shore. Her arms were raised above her head as she wrung her hair dry, the moonlight bathing her naked form in a soft, ethereal glow. His lips curled into a smile of appreciation as his eyes skimmed over her breasts and down to the flare of her hips.

It wasn’t until she’d stepped out of the water and turned her face to the moon that Draco finally recognized her. His heart began pounding and he stepped back in alarm. His foot landed hard on a branch, snapping it loudly. Immediately a voice called out, “Who’s there?”

In a panic, he dug into his jacket for his wand. As soon as his fingers touched the smooth wood, his surroundings began to dissolve until he found himself back inside his flat. He was still breathing rather unevenly, so he walked over to a cabinet and drew out a bottle of Scotch. Draco decided against a glass and instead drank directly out of the bottle.

It had taken him years to forget Luna Lovegood’s face, and now she was going to haunt his dreams again.

He hadn’t planned on returning to the lake. In fact, he kept reminding himself that it was foolish and reckless, two things he hadn’t been for quite some time. Despite that warning, Draco found himself behind the same tree, watching intently as Luna swam and frolicked in the water. He continued to come around night after night, sometimes staying for only a few minutes so that she wouldn’t catch him spying on her. It had worked so far, but unfortunately his luck had just run out.

“You should come out from that tree unless you want acorns rained down on you.”

Draco froze in alarm. How did she know he was there? He thought about slipping away but since she’d already sensed his presence, it seemed rather silly. Feeling slightly embarrassed, Draco moved out from the shadow of the tree and stepped forward.

“Lovegood,” he said in a neutral manner. He braced himself, expecting to see her erupt in anger. Instead, she seemed delighted to see him.

“Ah, Draco, it’s you.” Luna Lovegood beamed at him as she waded closer. “The Twillerbees have been rather agitated over the last week. They must’ve found you threatening.” With a tilt of her head, she indicated the tree behind him. “So what have you been up to, Draco? I haven’t seen you in such a long time.” She stopped when she was a few feet away. Even in the pale light, he could make out the shadow between her thighs. He looked away quickly.

“Ah…” He fumbled for a response. The conversation was more suited to a parlor, conducted over a cup of tea and plate of biscuits. Not in the middle of the night, with one party naked and dripping wet.

Draco shoved his hands inside his pockets. “Nothing much,” he offered. He wasn’t about to share the details of his nomadic existence with her.

To his relief she didn’t push him. “So much has happened since you left,” she continued on in that same friendly tone. “I’m doing a field study on Thestrals for the Journal of Magical Creatures. Professor— I mean, Headmistress McGonagall was kind enough to let me stay at the castle while I conducted research.” She lifted her arm to push her damp hair behind her ears, and the slight movement of her body created ripples around her.

“Huh,” he offered weakly. The awkwardness of the situation finally got to him. “Look, I’ve got to go—”

“Of course.” She nodded at him and moved back until her shoulders were beneath the water’s surface. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” he said slowly. Luna waved cheerfully at him as he Disapparated, and he was sure that he was seeing the last of her.

Apparently, she knew something he did not. Draco came back the next night, and the night after that. She was always swimming in the lake when he turned up, seemingly unconcerned with her nudity. Luna appeared delighted with his company, a fact that added to his discomfort. At first he hung back, unsure of what to do, but unable to leave. Eventually he grew more comfortable in her presence, though he made sure to not stare at her directly whenever she rose out of the water.

They followed a fairly simple routine: Luna would chat about other field studies she’d done while he made himself comfortable on the grass and watched the stars move across the night sky. She’d tried to get him to open up about the past five years but his short, vague answers must have discouraged her, for she rarely brought it up anymore.

Tonight she’d been unusually quiet. To fill the silence, he began bouncing pebbles along the surface of the water. He was about to toss his tenth one when she finally spoke.

“You saved my life, Draco.”

The pebble flew from his hand and sank immediately under the water. Draco frowned as he stared at the dark, rippled surface. He didn’t want to think about that awful time. “I was only trying to save myself,” he replied quietly before looking away. He picked up another pebble, turning it over and over in his hand. “It was my fault that they took you. I told them when you’d be on the train.” His hand closed tightly over the stone, its sharp edges digging into his palm.

“But you helped me escape,” she insisted. The sincerity in her voice took him by surprise. “You could’ve come with me. You didn’t have to run off by yourself.”

He shook his head. Undaunted, Luna continued. “I didn’t even get to thank you properly.”

Draco let out a sharp laugh and turned to look at her. “You’re not suggesting—”

“If that’s what you want,” she replied. She began to move toward him.

“No, no…it’s not necessary,” he protested weakly. “I should go, it’s getting late.” He stood up and quickly left before she could say goodbye.

Draco waited a few days before returning to the lake. Part of him hoped that she’d given up her nightly habit. Then he’d have no reason to return to Hogwarts. When he Apparated at the edge of the lake, he found Luna waiting for him.

“Why don’t you come in?” she called out.

“I don’t have my swim trunks with me,” he said.

“That doesn’t matter, does it?”

“No, it doesn’t.”

He stood up and took off his shirt under her watchful gaze. It was hard to tell what she was thinking. Suddenly nervous, he fumbled with the zipper on his trousers, taking an absurdly long time to pull them off completely. Finally naked, he waded into the water until he was standing in front of her.

Luna reached up to his head. He felt her fingers tug gently at the short tufts of blond hair. "I rather like it," she said, nodding in approval. Before she could withdraw her arm, his fingers closed over her wrist. Turning it over, Draco ran his thumb over the faint silvery lines on the inside of her wrist. He looked at her questioningly.

“Hermione said she could make them go away,” she offered as she thoughtfully examined the scars. “I told her it was okay. They were…interesting.”

Draco couldn’t believe what he was hearing. While he wanted to put that period behind him, Luna carried around memories of the time she’d spent inside his father’s dungeon. He touched his lips softly to the inside of her wrist. Her soft exhalation of surprise encouraged him. He trailed his lips up her arm, pulling her closer until her face was inches away from his. He leaned in, eager to taste her. Draco coaxed her mouth open, his tongue slipping inside to tease hers. Luna moaned as she twined her arms around his neck, the delightful sound making his cock twitch. His hands skimmed down her back and dipped into the water. He spread his fingers across the rounded curves of her arse, his thigh pushing her legs apart.

While he hungrily explored her warm mouth, Draco moved back, drawing Luna along with him until they reached the edge of the lake. He sat down and pulled her on top of him.

“Oh!” Luna exclaimed as she tumbled into his lap. Her gaze slid down his chest. “Oh!” she repeated with a soft laugh. She straddled his thighs and wrapped her fingers around his cock. Draco shut his eyes with a groan and leaned back on his elbows. He felt himself grow even harder as she continued to stroke him. “God, that feels so good,” he moaned as his hips jerked up against her.

“I think you’ll like this one much more,” she teased him as she shifted her body on top of him. Draco breathed in sharply as her pussy, slick and hot, rubbed against his cock. His eyes flew open and he saw Luna poised above him. She slowly lowered herself until his cock was fully sheathed inside her.

“Mmm…that feels…very nice,” she breathed. Draco groaned in agreement. After a few moments, Luna began to rock gently. Raising one hand to her breast, he captured the stiff peak between his fingers. Luna drew a deep, shuddering breath as she arched her back. Pleased by her response, Draco drew the tight, pink nipple into his mouth.

“Oh, Draco,” she moaned as she began bucking wildly. He could feel her pulsing tighter around him. In one smooth movement, Draco flipped her over, his cock still buried deep inside her. He hooked her leg over his arm as he thrust roughly into her. He could barely hear Luna’s scream over the loud pounding of his heart. With a groan, he emptied his seed inside her, his face buried against her neck.

Draco slid off to her side, keeping his arm wrapped around her waist. Minutes passed, filled with the sound of their heavy breathing. After some time, Luna pushed herself up on her elbows. “Draco,” she said softly, “I need to get back.”

They got dressed in silence. As he was about to leave, Luna pulled him close and brushed her lips gently against his. “I’ll see you tomorrow,” she whispered before stepping back and letting him go.

As he Apparated beside the lake the next night, Draco was instantly aware that something wasn’t quite right. The lake was empty, the surface of the water still. The intense feeling of disappointment took him by surprise.

A voice called out from somewhere above him. “I’m here, Draco.”

He turned around and found Luna sitting on a tree branch, her legs swinging back and forth. She jumped lightly and landed on her feet. “Are you ready?”

Confused, Draco asked, “Ready for what?”

She slipped her hand inside his and began to lead him up the path. He held back, unsure of where she was going. Luna looked over her shoulder and smiled reassuringly at him. "It'll be alright.”

Draco looked beyond her, to the row of towering pines that guarded Dumbledore’s tomb. “How did you know?”

Luna tilted her head. “Well, I didn’t think your only reason for coming to Hogwarts was to spy on me.” She gently squeezed his hand.

Draco took a deep breath. “Yeah, I’m ready,” he said, and together they walked up the path.
